HMD’s ‘SMART Initiatives’ aims to foster students’ holistic development

MALAYBALAY CITY – In response to the challenges faced by students in the Hospitality Management Department (HMD), the department has introduced a mentorship program known as the SMART (Support, Mentorship, Advancement and Resource Training) Initiatives, which aimed to foster the students’ academic and personal development.

The mentorship program happened every Wednesday in the month of April at the College of Business Building. It aimed to provide assistance to students who were struggling with incomplete activities and missing grades.

By offering support, mentorship, advancement, and resource training, the program endeavored to help students thrive academically and personally, particularly during the transition from remote learning to face-to-face classes amidst the pandemic.

The cornerstone of the SMART Initiatives was its mentorship program, wherein HMD instructors dedicated their time and expertise to guide and monitor students’ progress. Recognizing that students may feel overwhelmed by a multitude of responsibilities, the program aimed to provide the necessary support to ensure that students could complete their missing outputs.

The mentorship component of the program offered personalized attention and assistance, which enabled students to catch up with their lessons effectively.

The success of the SMART Initiatives would not have been possible without the valuable assistance of the League of Hospitality Leaders officers. These student leaders played a pivotal role in organizing and coordinating the program’s activities, which ensured a smooth implementation. Their commitment and dedication contributed significantly to the overall success of the mentorship program, fostering a sense of community within the HMD.

The SMART mentorship programs have received an overwhelmingly positive response from the students who have participated. Many express gratitude for the program’s usefulness and acknowledge it as a valuable opportunity to cope with their academic obligations. With the program’s guidance and resources, students have been able to bridge the gaps in their learning and enhance their understanding of course material, all while addressing any personal challenges they may face.

The Hospitality Management Department recognizes the importance of mental health among its students, particularly during these challenging times. The SMART Initiatives reflect the department’s commitment to addressing the holistic well-being of its students. By providing a supportive environment and mentorship opportunities, the program not only helps students academically but also contributes to their emotional and mental well-being.

HMD Chairperson Dr. Annie Leah Roxann L. Emata, expressed her gratitude to the faculty and BukSU Top Management for their unwavering support. The successful implementation of this program was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the department and the institution as a whole, showcasing their dedication to student success and well-being. Moreover, the program’s emphasis on mental health highlighted the department’s commitment to nurturing the holistic development of its students. (MARVEN JAN A. NADELA/HMD)
