276 interns undergo two-week pre-deployment training

MALAYBALAY CITY – In preparation for deployment in their respective workplaces, 276 interns from the Sociology and Social Science department have undergone intensive training courses on January 9-13 and January 23-27, 2023.

During the first week of training on January 9-13, the interns have participated in the following courses: English in the Workplace, Graphic Design and Videography, and Online Learning: The 21st Century Approach to Education.

On January 23-27, the areas covered were Personality Development, Ethics and Accountability of Public Servants, Awareness on Sexual Harassment and Safe Space Act, Internship General Orientation and Parent’s Consultative Meeting.

The main objective of the training course is to equip the students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed in the workplace. Further, training courses will provide a way to enhance the career path, thus enabling better opportunities for progression and this would eventually encourage soft skill development such as time management, communication, and most of all self-confidence.

During the Parent’s Consultative Meeting Dr. Maribel G. Valdez, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, cited “parents” as “great partners” in this endeavor.

Ms. Jennyleigh A. Mangubat, the Department Chairperson, and Internship Coordinator then presented and explained thoroughly the CMO No.104 Series of 2017- otherwise known as Revised Guidelines for Students Internship Program in the Philippines (SIPP) for all Programs.

This was to assure the parents that their children will be secured upon deployment. The parents’ consent was also signed in the presence of the College Dean and the internship advisers. It was then duly notarized by a registered lawyer.

To foster human development and active leadership, the Department of Sociology and Social Science designed the internship program as a means to establish local partnerships in the Local Government Agencies and Local Government Units.

The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, Philippine Statistics Authority, Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, Department of Agrarian Reform, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Philippine Postal Corporation, Bureau of Fire Protection and Land Transportation Office, as well as the Local Government Units of Banisilan, North Cotabato, Wao Lanao Del Sur, Kalilangan, Pangantucan, Maramag, Kibawi, Don Carlos, Quezon, San Fernando, Cabanglasan, Lantapan, Impasug-ong and Sumilao, Malaybalay City and Valencia City were among the select agencies and organizations where the interns were deployed.

The department deployed interns to Non-government Organizations like Philippine National Red Cross-Bukidnon Chapter.

The series of activities conducted by the Department for Sociology and Social Science interns have been directly to equip the students for deployment in different agencies.

On top of that, monitoring and exit conferences will also be added as part of the prepared activities by the department for the interns to ensure productive internship experiences and to hone them for the future real-world workplace situation. The deployment preparation was inspired by Collin Powell, the 65th United States Secretary of State, who said, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” (Ms Amihan Liway Sayson, Ms Shiela May L. Kicnit, Ms Judy Jyrah Yulo, Ms Reese Amor T. Sabacajan)
