Newly-appointed CHED Commissioner Desiderio Apag III, who also serves as the chairman of Bukidnon State University’s (BukSU) Board of Regents, is bringing fresh leadership and ambitious goals to the institution.

1. He Aims to Transform BukSU into a Smart University
Apag envisions BukSU becoming a leader in digital education. He is committed to expanding smart classrooms and integrating advanced learning technologies to enhance the educational experience.
2. He Has a Strong Background in CHED Region 10
Before becoming commissioner, Apag served as CHED Region 10’s Chief Administrative Officer and Education Supervisor. He worked closely with state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the region, gaining firsthand experience in academic policy implementation and institutional development.
3. He Has Extensive Experience in Engineering and Technology
With expertise in robotics, mechatronics, and automation, Apag understands the role of technology in modern education. His background helps him create strategies that align with global trends in digital learning.
4. He Wants to Strengthen Faculty Development
Apag believes that empowering educators is key to improving academic institutions. He supports faculty upskilling initiatives, particularly in engineering and semiconductor technology, with plans for international collaborations.
5. He Oversees 23 SUCs as BOR Chairperson
Apag sits as BOR chairperson for 23 SUCs across the country. This includes 11 SUCs from Central Luzon and 12 from Mindanao, giving him a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing higher education institutions in different regions.
6. He is Actively Engaging with BukSU Leaders
During his recent visit, Apag met with BukSU officials and faculty members to discuss the university’s progress and future direction. He emphasized working together to achieve a shared vision for the institution.
7. He Has a Strong Educational and Professional Background
Apag holds a Bachelor of Computer Engineering from the University of San Carlos, a Master’s in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and a Doctor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering-Robotics from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). He also pursued advanced studies in mechatronics, robotics, and automation in Germany. Before joining CHED, he worked as a training instructor at Qatar Petroleum and served as an assistant professor at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines.
8. He Values Humility and Faith in Leadership
Apag credits his journey to divine guidance, saying he prepares himself daily to fulfill his responsibilities. He believes in staying humble and continuously learning to serve better.
9. His Term as CHED Commissioner Runs Until 2028
