Student leaders recall AIDS awareness event, student radio program among memorable feats

Supreme Student Council officers during BukSU Updates Episode 7 aired on DXBU 104.5 FM.

MALAYBALAY CITY (OP-IPS) BukSU’s Supreme Student Council student leaders cited an awareness event on acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and a student ran radio program as their memorable accomplishments in the second semester of 2021.

Mr. Red Yambagon, SSC senate president and a Public Administration student, said his engagement in organizing an awareness webinar on AIDS is most memorable to him during the Student Segment of BukSU Updates on February 16, 2022.

“Not only because I was the program coordinator and committee head of the (AIDS Awareness) program, it was very productive in a way that I have learned new knowledge that there is still hope (for people living with AIDS-HIV),” Yambagon said on the program’s Episode 7 aired on DXBU 104.5 FM.

He added how he previously thought there is no hope for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-affected individuals, but after the webinar, he realized there is still hope for them.

He mentioned how important education is, especially when it comes to understanding HIV-AIDS.

“I got to open my eyes to new knowledge, new perspectives, and new things regarding AIDS. We can understand further what really is this ailment,” he added.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The AIDS Awareness Webinar was held on December 1, 2021 with the theme: “End Inequalities, End AIDS.” This webinar, according to Mr. Yambagon, was celebrated in commemoration of those who were affected by HIV-AIDS.

Ms. Maria Ayessa Honcada, a writer from the Supreme Student Council and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language student who also appeared as guest in the episode, said her most memorable accomplishment is the holding of the Student Buddy radio program streamed live via Facebook.

During the activity, she said, they have read the students’ requests, messages, and confessions on Facebook live. They have also discussed the students’ forms of entertainment when they are not studying their lessons.

According to her, this activity has given the students an opportunity to take a break from their modules and academic responsibilities. “It has given us the opportunity to address their concerns and take a breather from the academe for a while,” she added. (Diana Rose B. Lagoy/OP-IPS)
