Research Unit

Research Unit

The Research Unit (RU) is the lead research centre in the University. It is mandated to nurture and sustain the culture of research vis-à-vis streamlining of research policies and procedures, capability development activities for university researchers and implementation of quality assurance measures for university research endeavour. The RU is under the supervision of the University President, through the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension and International Affairs (OVPREIA). It is headed by the Research Director, Dr. Beverly B. Bicar, with the support of the Research Committee (RC), Research Ethics Committee (REC), the Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences (APJSBS) Editorial Board and the deans of the different colleges in the university.

Mission

Generate emergent breakthroughs in social and behavioural researches and other emerging trends in mathematics, science and technology, to improve the quality of life in society.

Strategic Goal

The goal of the RU is to produce research leaders who are able to initiate innovations in consonance with the mandates of the university.

General Objective

The RU shall take the lead in the conduct of quality researches on the following fields: education, ecology and environment, socio-economic-political-cultural and mathematics, science and technology, as well as institutional researches.

Specific Objectives

The RU shall strive to accomplish the following specific objectives:

  • To provide adequate support for faculty researchers
  • To enhance the research productivity of BukSU faculty and students
  • To increase the number of plantilla faculty and students who are engaged in research

University Research Agenda

The Research Agenda of the RU, as identified by the different colleges in the university, determine the kind of researches which the faculty can undertake. Research proposals are appraised based on their relevance to these focus areas. The research thrusts and priorities of BukSU are based on the research agenda of CHED, NHERA, NEDA, DOST-SEI and whenever applicable, other agencies where research occupies the depth and breadth of their activities. The university encourages researches that are multi-disciplinary and those that can benefit the neighbouring communities. The research agenda are clustered into the following broad disciplines:

Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Research Program in the Province of Bukidnon, Philippines (2017-2020)

This DRRM research program aims to develop an integrated framework for the assessment of various adaptive measures of disaster risk reduction and management for the Province of Bukidnon.   It intended to conduct various projects in the field of governance, education, health and science.  It particularly focused on the basic services of LGUs, DRR and Management for school-aged children, health and environmental risk assessment and land use policies.  The overall expected output of this program is an integrated framework for the assessment of various adaptive measures to respond to issues in areas prone to flooding in the Province of Bukidnon, specifically in the communities along the protected areas in the province.

Training for Research Trainers

The RU conducts training workshop for research trainers to empower the university faculty to become effective research leaders in their respective field of expertise. The capability development activity consists of twelve (12) outcomes-based modules which strengthen the technical research skills of BukSU faculty vis-à-vis sessions on writing publishable papers and new research methodologies, among others.

As of July, 2019, the RU is on its 2nd Batch of Trainees for the Training for Research Trainers. This TOT is designed for the mentees to become research mentors themselves. New research methodologies are also introduced. Dr. Roberto N. Padua, Former CHED Commissioner and BukSU Research Consultant, is the resource person of the TOT.

2020 In House-Review of Capsule Proposals

The In-House Review of Capsule Proposals was conducted by RU on July 1, 2020. The In-House Review of Capsule Proposals serves as a venue for BuKSU researches to present their proposals for funding of the university. Fifty (50) research proposals were presented by faculty of the different colleges. The BukSU Research Committee (RC) and Research Ethics Committee (REC) members were the panel of experts during the proposal presentation.

Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences

The Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences, formerly Bukidnon State University Research Journal,  is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that aims to provide an avenue for researchers exhibiting emergent breakthroughs in the different disciplines of social and behavioral sciences. It publishes research articles focusing on economics, financing, governance and management of higher education; human resource supply and demand; institutional accreditation/quality assurance studies; institution-building studies and research utilization studies. It also welcomes the publication of papers related to education, science, and health, ecology, and environment; socio-economic, political and cultural studies as well as humanities and communication.

Awards and Recognition

Ulirang Guro

The Ulirang Guro sa Filipino award is the annual recognition given by the KWF to outstanding Filipino teachers who show great dedication in promoting Filipino and other indigenous languages thru commendable use of Filipino as medium of instruction.

For 2019, in its sixth year of giving the award, the KWF selected the seven Ulirang Guro sa Filipino from 139 nominations nationwide. One of these awardees is Dr. Rodello Pepito, SWAK Director. He received the award last October 1, at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Manila. This is the second time that a BukSU faculty received the award. Dr. Judith Singcolan of the BukSU Language and Letters Department also received the award last 2017.

Sentro ng Wika at Kultura

The Sentro ng Wika at Kultura (SWAK) was established in 2018 by virtue of a Memorandum of Agreement signed by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) represented by Commissioner Virgilio S. Almario and Bukidnon State University, represented by Dr. Oscar B. Cabañelez. As the regional branch of the KWF, the SWAK takes the lead in sustaining the cultural resources of Northern Mindanao. Its mandate include the conduct of researches, conferences and other academic activities which can promote Filipino as the national language and at the same time, strengthen indigenous languages.

Selyo ng Kahusayan

The Selyo ng Kahusayn is a distinction given to any of the 41 Sentro ng Wika at Kultura all over the Philippines for excellence and efficiency in carrying out the projects and activities of the KWF. It also recognizes the leadership exemplified by the Sentro in terms of organizing activities to promote Filipino language and culture. BukSU received its third Selyo ng Kahusayan last August 27, 2019 at the Balay Alumni, University of the Philippines, Quezon City. The university received its first and second Selyo last 2016 and 2018 respectively.

Aside from the Selyo, two BSE Filipino alumni also received recognition. Mr. Precioso M. Dahe, received the Gawad KWF Mananasay ng Taon para sa kanyang akdang pinamagatan na “Dabong-Yabong Filipinas: Ang Etnolingguwistikong Paggalugad sa Katutubong Wika Bilang Adarga” while Mr. Jhon Joseph Pandong was awarded as the First KWF Ambassador sa Wika. Both awardees are BSE Filipino Batch 2017 graduates of BukSU.

Bantayog ng Wika

The country’s 6th Bantayog-Wika was installed at the Bukidnon Provincial Freedom Park, Capitol Compound, Malaybalay last July 9, 2018. The KWF Chairperson and National Artist Virgilio S. Almario formally installed the Bantayog. Commissioner Almario said that the monument was an acknowledgement to the local Binukid knowledge and a reflection of the local government’s effort to preserve local languages in the Philippines. He further noted that Bukidnon’s Bantayog-Wika is the second of its kind in Mindanao, the other monument was installed in Mati City, Davao Oriental as recognition to the Manday’a language.

The inscription in the Bukidnon Bantayog-Wika is the alibata form of Gat Andres Bonifacio’s poem, “Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Bayan.”
