Bukidnon State University (BukSU) concluded a two-day Gender Sensitivity Training (GST) to empower student leaders with knowledge and strategies for fostering gender equality within their organizations and the university community on May 22-23, 2025, at the 4th Floor Conference Hall, Research and Extension Building.
The program, led by the University GAD Resource Center (UGRC), aimed to equip student leaders with tools to identify and address gender biases, promote practices, and champion gender mainstreaming.
The first day of training laid groundwork. Ms. Mary Ann S. Suello, Technical Staff of the UGRC, led discussions on “Understanding the Basic Concepts of GAD” and “The Agents of Gender Socialization.”
These sessions provided participants with a framework for comprehending gender and its influences. Dr. Marichu B. Montecillo, UGRC Director, furthered the discourse with topics such as “Manifestations of Gender Bias,” “Gender and Leadership,” and “Gender and Power,” encouraging student leaders to examine power dynamics and their impact on gender. The day included workshops designed to challenge notions, stimulate reflection, and cultivate a mindset for leadership.
The second day of training saw student leaders applying their knowledge. Dr. Montecillo guided sessions on “Inclusive Language and Communication” and “Gender Mainstreaming in Student Organizations.” These topics came to life through workshops and action planning sessions. Participants identified gender issues within their organizations and brainstormed strategies to promote inclusivity and equity, bridging the gap between understanding and implementation.
“The success of the Gender Sensitivity Training was made possible through the support of Bukidnon State University, particularly its University President, Dr. Joy M. Mirasol. Her commitment to empowering student leaders underscores BSU’s dedication to nurturing a generation of champions for gender equality. This initiative is a testament to BSU’s approach in fostering an equitable and inclusive environment for all its constituents,” UGRC shared on social media. (Ms. Mary Ann S. Suello, Technical Staff of the UGRC)
