Lantapan Campus Students, Faculty Gain Basic Life Support Skills

Students and faculty of Bukidnon State University (BukSU) Lantapan Campus participated in a Basic Life Support (BLS) training through a coordinated effort with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Lantapan, on April 30, 2025.

The activity focused on practical instruction in life-saving techniques as part of the campus’s emergency preparedness efforts.

The event was led by Ryle S. Alejo, the campus’s Administrative Staff member and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Coordinator, along with a trained response team from the local government. The training focused on developing practical skills through drills that moved from theory to direct application.

Student attendees from the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) program shared how the training affected their perception of emergency response.

Para sa akoa, dako gid kaayo nga tabang nga makabalo ta sa basic medical support na mahatag nato sa isa ka tawo nga himalatyon, which is CPR (For me, it’s a great help to know basic medical support that we can give to a dying person, which is CPR),” said first-year BSTM student Christian Rey Tamula.

Khym Louie Molina said she acquired skills relevant to future employment. Lemar Cardines explained that the session gave him practical experience in performing compressions consistently and accurately.

“Mastering 30 chest compressions at 100–120 per minute with minimal interruptions has boosted my confidence in responding to emergencies,” said Cardines.

BukSU Lantapan Campus Head Dr. Shella Amor C. Monsanto said the activity is aligned with the university’s contribution to public health goals, citing its relevance to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

“By expanding life-saving services at the community level (Target 3.8) and strengthening local emergency response networks (Target 3.d), and serves as a powerful example of how the integration of academic instruction with proactive community engagement fosters genuine preparedness, ultimately proving that health resilience thrives where education and action converge,” said Monsanto.

Similar training sessions were conducted at BukSU’s main campus and EduHub on the same day. These were organized in collaboration with respective local DRRM offices and the university’s own DRRM Unit. (Shella Amor C. Monsanto, BukSU Lantapan Campus Head)
