BukSU hosts NCCA’s disaster management training for Mindanao librarians, archivists

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), through its National Committee on Archives and the Subcommission on Cultural Heritage, held a disaster management training-workshop for Mindanao-based librarians and archivists at Bukidnon State University (BukSU) on May 27, 2024.

Dr. Neil Martial Santillan, Head of the National Committee on Historical Research, led a session on utilizing digital archives and libraries for enhancing the disaster resiliency of cultural heritage collections.

This was followed by a presentation on basic archive management and preservation by Ms. Denise Marie Cruz-Betia, Executive Committee Member of the National Committee on Archives.

The training concluded with a practical workshop on disaster recovery techniques, which included methods for drying slightly wet books and pamphlets, very wet books, and wet documents led by Ms. Emma C. Muñoz-Rey, Head of the National Committee on Archives.

Ms. Emma C. Muñoz-Rey, Head of the National Committee on Archives, demonstrated how to make a phase box, a wrapper case which were designed to be used on dormant, rare and fragile book collections.

However, the ever-present threat of disasters encouraged us to be proactive, this training workshop equips you… you will learn best practices and skills from our invited professionals. In the phase of technological information, ensuring the physical survival of our cultural heritage is crucial more than ever,” said BukSU President Mirasol, in a message read by College of Public Governance Dean Dr. Lalevie C.
