LGU Malaybalay partners BukSU for DRRM-related studies

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension and Innovations (OVPREI) and the Local Government Unit of Malaybalay (LGU Malaybalay) initiated a research and extension project dubbed as Project ADOREE or the ‘Assisting Disaster risk reduction and management Officers on Research and Extension Engagement’ on May 23-24, 2024 at the 4th Floor Conference Hall, Research and Extension Building.

“The intention of this project partnership is to capacitate the CDRMM personnel and produce DRRM-related research studies, and achieve enhanced decision-making and improved disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts,” VP for Research, Extension, and Innovation (VPREI) Dr. Carina Joan V. Barroso said.

Further, Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican, BukSU-Extension Unit Director, said the main objective of the project is to strengthen the disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) officers’ capabilities through research capacity development.

Project ADOREE came to birth in October 2023 when Engr. Sony David Belderol, Chief of the Research and Planning Division of Malaybalay City DRRMO, addressed a letter to BukSU for technical assistance in terms of helping the LGU to produce scientific studies.

Representatives from the LGU participated in the series of talks and workshops. These offices were from City DRRMO, City Planning and Development Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, City Urban Development Housing Division under the Office of the City Mayor, City Social Welfare and Development Office, and City Agriculture Office. 

The venture aimed to develop training program tailored to the needs of the DRRM clienteles. It also aimed to conduct training on the basic research concepts and methodologies for knowledge and skills enhancement of DRRM officers in the city. And, to assist the DRRM personnel in the conduct, dissemination and publication of research related to local hazard mapping, risk assessments, and resilience strategies.

Dr. Derren Gaylo, Director for the Center for Educational Analytics, provided a talk and workshop on identifying problems.

Dr. Carina Joane V. Barroso, VPREI, led the workshops for providing solutions, and defining of research problems and teams.

Towards the last day of the activity, participants were taught about data collection and ethical principle.

Project ADOREE will continue until November 2024 with a series of workshops on:

• Data Analysis and Interpretation
• Writing a Compelling Introduction
• Writing the Research Methodology
• Writing Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and Recommendations
