Bukidnon State University welcomed Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) Ambassador Peter Kell to promote the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships Programme on January 23, 2024. The session aimed to inform young academics and practitioners including indigenous young professionals about the scholarship opportunities.
Additionally, Amb. Kell discussed how Aotearoa NZ, through its development partnership, supports indigenous peoples in the Philippines, highlighting BukSU’s efforts in promoting indigenous knowledge and worldviews.
Dr. Joy M. Mirasol, SMART BukSU President, in her opening remarks emphasized the priority of the university to contribute for sustainable development.
“BukSU is fully committed to supporting sustainable development, and these scholarships align perfectly with our dedication to fostering positive change. We believe in investing in individuals who, through their education and experiences abroad, will become catalysts for sustainable development in their own communities and countries. The knowledge and skills acquired through these scholarships will empower our scholars to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of society.”
Ambassador Kell talked about the connection of NZ and Philippines, and the reason why students in BukSU were chosen.
“Why BukSU? Why you? Thirty percent (30%) of students are IP. Part of the commitment of the scholarships programme is to share opportunities for IP and Muslim communities.”
NZ International Development Cooperation Manager Dyan Mabunga Rodrigue presented the background of the scholarships programme.
“As a Pacific country and global citizen, Aotearoa New Zealand supports sustainable development by offering transformational scholarships that build the knowledge and skills of individuals who contribute positively to their communities and countries.”
“Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships are part of the New Zealand Government’s development support to build prosperity, security and sustainable growth in our partner countries. Manaaki New Zealand Scholars will have a lifetime connection with New Zealand,” she added.
The study themes under the programme were climate change and resilience, and good governance. Sectors under these themes were: climate change and the environment, health, disaster management, food security and agriculture, renewable energy, and governance.
Alumni from the programme provided inspirational messages to the audience.
Ms. Vilma Lorca, a faculty member of BukSU Community Development, studied in Lincoln University in 2011, and Mr. Hans Mahilum studied in Massey University in 2021.
“Just do it!” Amb. Kell left this important message to the aspiring scholars.
