As the service department of the College of Arts and Sciences the General Education Courses Department aims to create avenues for students to develop the self and eventually take part in the development of their families, the Filipino Society and Nation, and appreciate diversity and care for about problems in the global community. This is done through the development of intellectual competencies, Personal and Civic Responsibilities, and Practical Skills (CHED CMO No. 20 Series of 2013).

Additionally, the department provides avenues for students to appreciate local culture and the pursuit of peace through the teaching of Philippine Indigenous Communities and Peace Studies. It also ensures that these are integrated and taught in all programs for the specific purpose of cultural appreciation for Indigenous communities and the peaceful resolution of all forms of conflict (CHED CMO 1 and 2 Series of 2019); and become Gender Sensitive and proactive in the promotion of Gender and Development (CHED CMO 1 Series of 2015).

History

Since the beginning of the SY 2020-2021, the General Education Courses Department has directly taken charge of the teaching and supervision of the non-major subjects offered in the different programs at Bukidnon State University. These courses/subjects include the 9 core General Education (GE) Courses that are mandated via CHED’s CMO 20 Series of 2013. Included are the 9 units of electives that students are required to take GE EL 102 Gender and Society (CHED CMO 1 Series of 2015) and GE EL 108 Philippine Indigenous Communities and Peace Studies (CHED CMO 1 and 2 Series of 2019). The Department has also taken charge of the teaching of Institutional Courses. The GEC, Electives, and Institutional Courses have been given to other departments within the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Technologies as the expertise of the faculty required in the teaching of the GEC and Elective courses belongs to the departments under these Colleges.
