In line with preparations for Typhoon Basyang, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Unit (DRRMU) intensified its real-time climate action measures in support of Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action.
As part of its proactive risk reduction strategy, DRRMU deployed monitoring teams across the BukSU Main Campus to conduct preventive inspections of critical infrastructure.
These inspections focused on identifying potential hazards in campus buildings, particularly by checking windows, roofs, and ceilings for leaks or structural vulnerabilities that could be exacerbated by strong winds and heavy rainfall. Preventive maintenance actions were immediately recommended to concerned offices to minimize risks to occupants and facilities.
“The BukSU community was formally advised to avoid parking vehicles in high-risk areas, particularly beneath trees with loose or overhanging branches, to reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by falling debris during adverse weather conditions. Campus drainage systems were likewise inspected and cleared to prevent clogging and flooding, thereby ensuring the efficient flow of rainwater during prolonged periods of rainfall,” DRRMU shared.
According to DRMMU, areas with loose concrete flooring, unstable fences, and other structural vulnerabilities were systematically identified, inspected, and documented to prevent potential injuries and property damage. These precautionary actions reflect the DRRMU’s commitment to anticipatory and preventive disaster risk management, emphasizing risk reduction before the onset of hazards rather than reliance on post-impact response.
By implementing these real-time preparedness activities, Bukidnon State University reinforces its institutional resilience and affirms its responsibility to safeguard lives, protect infrastructure, and ensure academic continuity amid increasing climate-related hazards.
