Students of Bukidnon State University (BukSU) Libona enrolled in the National Service Training Program (NSTP) have showcased their organic vegetable harvest, an initiative that aligns seamlessly with BukSU’s vision of becoming a “Green University.” This project not only reflects NSTP’s mission of fostering civic consciousness and community engagement but also contributes to the university’s broader sustainability goals.
Under the leadership of NSTP Coordinator Mr. Abe Angelo B. Doria, the organic farming initiative has been positioned as a transformative educational experience. Doria emphasized: “This project goes beyond farming—it cultivates civic responsibility and environmental stewardship by teaching students how sustainable agriculture impacts nutrition security, ecological resilience, and community well-being. By adopting organic practices such as composting and natural pest management, we are nurturing future leaders who understand the critical link between responsible farming and global goals like Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 2: Zero Hunger.”
The initiative complements BukSU’s green university efforts, which emphasize resource efficiency, waste reduction, and community-centered sustainability practices. University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol has previously highlighted BukSU’s commitment to integrating eco-friendly practices into education and campus operations: “Our journey toward becoming a green university is marked by milestones like reducing our carbon footprint and conserving resources. Projects like this showcase how sustainability can be woven into learning experiences to create lasting impact.”
Samuel Galagnao, a Bachelor of Public Administration student, shared his personal growth through the project: “Na-realize nako ang importansya sa pagtanum ug na-appreciate nako ang kinabuhi sa usa ka mag-uuma” (I realized the importance of planting and have come to appreciate the life of a farmer). His reflection highlights how hands-on activities instill respect for agricultural work while fostering civic responsibility and environmental awareness.
Through this initiative, BukSU Libona NSTP students are not only addressing immediate challenges like food security but also advancing the university’s vision of a greener future. Their efforts embody the principles of NSTP while reinforcing BukSU’s standing as a leader in sustainability in Northern Mindanao. As University President Dr. Joy Mirasol aptly stated: “We mark each step toward a greener BukSU as a step toward a greener tomorrow.” (Neal Bryan L. Rendal, BukSU Libona Campus Head)
