BukSU crafts SMART research, extension, and innovations agenda

Bukidnon State University (BukSU) conducted a SMART Research, Development and Extension (RDE) Talks to the unit heads and directors under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension and Innovations (OVPREI) on January 29, 2024 at the Research Conference Hall.

The SMART RDE Talks was created to look at the targets of BukSU’s research and extension programs aligning it to the regional, national, and global targets to respond to the pressing needs of the target communities.

The first day of the Talks started with the review of Office goals led by Dr. Helen P. Garcia, University Director for Planning and Development. Discussions were opened on the ways to meet these goals: (a) advance BukSU’s research and innovation on brand and reputation, (b) leverage inclusive sustainable development through relevant and responsive community engagement (c) foster stronger and collaborative partnership, and (d) mainstream gender equality to various processes, projects and activities of the university.

A review of the university research agenda was presented by Ms. Joan M.  Recente, Research Unit Director, and followed by a series of presentations from the research center heads.

Dr. Derren N. Gaylo, Head of the Center for Education Analytics, gave the research agenda for education.

Ms. Loraine Mae A. Añasco, Head of Center for Local Governance, imparted the research agenda for local governance, included in her presentation was the agenda for the Center for Mathematical Innovation on behalf of Dr. Zeny L. Maureal.

Mr Walter I. Balane, Head for the Center for Peace Studies, presented themes under the agenda relating to peace development.

The extension agenda was presented by Extension Unit Director Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican.

The heads and directors went through a workshop led by VPREI Dr. Carina Joane V. Barroso to create a unified SMART research, extension and innovations agenda. The participants of the workshop also walked through the different government and state universities and colleges (SUCs) agenda.

The Day 2 of the SMART RDE Talks began with the presentation of outputs from the workshop held on the preceding day. The crafted agenda was explained to the panel of experts consisting of academicians in the university:

  • Dean of the College of Education (Dr. Ann Sheila C. Del Rosario) for education
  • Former Program Head, BukSU Business Administration (Dr. Donna G. Tilanduca) for business
  • Copy Editor, Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences (Dr. Sarah Louise S. Atulba) for climate and environmental management
  • Program Head, BukSU Electronics Technology (DEngr. Manuel Chad C. Agurob) for innovations
  • Dr. Christine B. Tenorio for local governance

BukSU strives to create a SMART RDE framework that focuses on its expertise in peace studies, educational analytics, local governance, and mathematical innovations.

The discussions on the proposed university research agenda involved exploring strategies to address concerns about redundant plans across university research centers and extension agendas. Additionally, strategies for research funding and immediate utilization of scientific studies were also discussed during the deliberation.
