Stakeholders from across Bukidnon State University (BukSU) convened at the BukSU-Audio Visual Center for a validation forum focused on the proposed single-use plastic policy on April 23, 2025.
Student leaders, academic unit heads, and non-teaching personnel unit/office heads contributed their insights and feedback on the draft policy to formalize the existing green practices of BukSU towards its vision and advocacy as a leading institution of an environment-friendly/green campus.
Ms. Rosanna S. Generato, Chief Administrative Officer for the Administrative Division, emphasized BukSU’s stronghold in practicing climate actions.
“In 2024, BukSU took a meaningful step by discouraging the use of plastic balloons in all events and activities, as observed during the Centennial Celebration Alumni Homecoming. We would like to put this into writing and practice. We would also like to expand and formalize this practice across all BukSU campuses. We would like our stakeholders also to avoid single-use plastics whenever they conduct their activities in the campus. The implementation policy will be of no use if we do not get the support from students, personnel, visitors, and our tenants.”
Mr. Mark Gene L. Salga, BukSU’s Legal Assistant III, presented the draft of the single-use plastic policy, outlining its key provisions and intended scope on defining terms, purpose, strategies, sanctions, and incentives.
Following the presentation, Dr. Jessie G. Suson, the Malaybalay City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) provided valuable inputs, sharing perspectives on the practical implementation of such a policy.
A time was dedicated to an open forum and a stakeholders’ feedback session, allowing participants to voice their opinions, raise concerns, and offer suggestions for refining the draft policy.
The forum also included the symbolic signing of the Pledge Wall, signifying the stakeholders’ unified support for the initiative. A message of support and call to action further reinforced the collaborative spirit of the event.
“We envision that BukSU will become a plastic-free campus, making our university green. It becomes a norm observed in our school, our homes, and our communities. We want to be green champions, everyone in BukSU becomes a model green champion,” Ms. Generato added. (BukSU-Information Unit)
