A total of 11 research papers were presented by Bukidnon State University (BukSU) faculty members during the 2024 Research Colloquium, organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Innovation (OVPREI) on December 9.

The theme for this year’s colloquium, “Future in Focus: BukSU’s Vision for the Next Horizon,” centered on future-oriented research aligned with the university’s strategic vision of innovation, foresight, and community leadership.

OVPREI explained that the colloquium served as a platform for BukSU faculty, students, and stakeholders to present Futures Thinking studies—research exploring trends, uncertainties, and strategies crucial to ensuring long-term relevance and sustainability in education, research, and community service.

“Today future-thinking continues to serve as a critical tool for envisioning possibilities and preparing for the dynamic landscapes ahead,” said University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol. “BukSU has embraced futures-thinking to craft a vision that ensures resilience, adaptability, and innovation in the face of the ever-changing world.

Research topics included future scenarios of academic affairs in Philippine Higher Education, futuristic university campus building designs, foresight competence in a Philippine state university, the future of quality assurance in higher education, and emerging trends in student services.

Department of Science and Technology-Bukidnon Provincial Director Ms. Ritchie Mae L. Guno emphasized that research is not only about solving current problems but also anticipating future challenges.

“This is where foresight comes into play. By looking ahead we can identify emerging trends, potential disruptions, and future opportunities,” said Guno.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) expressed support for university-conducted research, recognizing its role in knowledge production and advancement.

“It is the Commission’s fervent hope that as a premier university and research university, BukSU will continue to lead in various research projects in support of local, regional, and national development, while continuing its programs to gather distinguish thinkers, educators, and innovators that are all driven by a shared commitment to advancing higher education,” said Dr. Miriam B. Fuentes, the OIC Regional Director of CHED-10.

Alongside research presentations, the colloquium featured plenary talks by experts from the Development Academy of the Philippines and the Philippines Futures Thinking Society.

“The future begins today with the choices we make and actions we take,” said Dr. Carina Joane V. Barroso, BukSU’s VPREI. “Let us carry forward the insights and inspiration gained from this colloquium as we boldly steps into BukSU’s next horizon.” (BukSU-Information Unit)
