When the Philippines achieved a Guinness World Record in October last year for the most people planting bamboo simultaneously, faculty and staff from Bukidnon State University (BukSU) Libona Campus played a significant role in the event.
A total of 2,305 participants from various institutions successfully planted approximately 20,000 bamboo seedlings across 19 sites in Mindanao and Leyte. The effort not only secured the record but also highlighted the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
Faculty members from BukSU Libona Campus, led by Campus Head Dr. Neal Bryan L. Rendal, served as professional witnesses to ensure strict compliance with Guinness World Records regulations for participants from the Municipality of Libona.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bert Anthony S. Bade, Mr. Abdul Najib G. Hadji Mannan, Ms. Jopel M. Bas, and Ms. Niñaflor S. Canoy acted as official stewards, supervising the participants throughout the planting process. Documentation of the event, including the exact count of participants and bamboo seedlings planted, was handled by Mr. Abe Angelo B. Doria and Ms. Rose Mary Grace T. Hapayon.
Bamboo is a versatile form of resource, which they said can be used to capture carbon, address floods, and produce materials for its users,” the Department of Science and Technology-Bukidnon said in a statement. “This planting event brought into focus reforestation and climate resistance measures, thus the global goals of combating climate change and developing a sustainable environment.”
“This activity proves the commitment of the BukSU Libona workforce to promoting environmentalism and establishing connections within the society by achieving a world record. Not only that, they help environmentalize the Philippines, but they also show how educational institutions can take an active stand in solving various environmental issues,” Rendal said.
Rendal also emphasized the importance of long-term sustainability by urging communities to continue supporting environmental protection initiatives to empower future generations. (Dr. Neal Bryan L. Rendal, Campus Head, BukSU Libona)
