Messages of impact and inspiration highlight the 50th anniversary of four CAS Programs

Bukidnon State University’s College of Arts and Sciences marked a major milestone on August 26, 2026, as its Economics, English Language, Sociology, and Mathematics programs celebrated their 50th golden anniversary at the University Gymnasium.

Opening the celebration, University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol reflected on the half-century of classrooms where countless lives have been shaped and dreams nurtured. She reminded the audience that the true legacy of education is measured not merely by the number of graduates produced, but by the people they become and the lives they continue to influence.

CAS Dean Dr. Maribel G. Valdez articulated the deeper purpose behind the jubilee. She explained how the four distinct disciplines have collectively formed the university’s intellectual backbone over five decades. Though rooted in different academic traditions, she noted, they remain united by a single mission: to nurture individuals capable of understanding the world and driving meaningful change.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Hazel Jean Abejuela delivered a solidarity message centered on leadership and character. She emphasized that great leaders are forged through prudence, integrity, and strength of character, praising the programs’ pioneers for instilling an enduring legacy of service in succeeding generations.

Personal reflections from distinguished alumni whose career paths exemplified the programs’ reach.

BA Sociology alumnus Elmer S. Montales, a municipal development planner in Arakan, Cotabato, shared how his education developed the resilience, compassion, and commitment needed to serve marginalized communities and Indigenous Peoples. Hon. Harvey Mediante, an Economics alumnus and Municipal Councilor in Marilao, Bulacan, highlighted how hard work, discipline, and courage prepare leaders to overcome adversity and make responsible choices.

English Language alumnus and Malaybalay City Councilor Hon. Alan Ryann Legaspi, together with Mathematics alumna Dr. Teresa Tacbobo, former head of the university’s Mathematics Department, underscored perseverance and mentorship as key drivers of personal and professional fulfillment.
