Bukidnon State University (BukSU) personnel and their families participated in the first “BukSU Family Run and Plogging: Dagan Para sa Kinaiyahan” on September 21, 2024. The event aimed to promote sustainability through fitness, community engagement, and environmental conservation.
“Plogging” combines jogging with picking up litter along the way. During the event, participants carried garbage bags to collect trash along the route, which spanned from the BukSU campus to the Capitol Grounds and the Folk Arts Theater.
A total of 50 kilos of litter was collected by the participants.
“We brought the clean-up spirit to the streets, proving that every effort counts in protecting our planet,” said BukSU Human Resource Officer III, Dr. Janne Claudian Salvaña.
Among the participants was Administrative Aide VI, Mr. Aldren Daga-ang, who joined the activity with his wife and daughter. “This is a perfect family-bonding activity that fosters not just physical fitness but also gives our family the chance to contribute to the cleanliness of our city,” Daga-ang said.
Several special awards were presented to participants in recognition of their contributions. The Eco-Warrior Family Award was given to Ms. Katherine Lou and Mr. Exhan Bandas for their “commitment to environmental conservation, sustainability, and community service.” Other awards included the Most Number of Family Participants Award for the family with the highest turnout, the Most Creative Participants Award for those with the most unique and engaging plogging attire, and the Early Birds Award for the first participants to arrive. Additionally, the Youngest Participant Award and Oldest Participant Award were given to recognize the youngest and oldest individuals participating in the event.
The “BukSU Family Run and Plogging” initiative is part of the university’s efforts to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It specifically addresses SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
SMART BukSU President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol commended the plogging initiative.
“This initiative is a commendable way to promote fitness, environmental awareness, and community engagement, aligning with BukSU’s commitment to sustainability and its role as a catalyst for positive change in the community. As we celebrate our civil service anniversary, this event serves as a testament to our dedication to public service and our commitment to creating a healthier and greener future,” she said.
The event was one of the major activities organized by the university to celebrate the 124th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary. (BukSU-Information Unit)
