With the ongoing commitment of Bukidnon State University (BukSU) to sustainable and eco-friendly practices, the sections previously adorned with banners and tarpaulins along J. F. Barroso Sr. Street in the main campus have been converted into a vertical garden.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer for Administrative Services, aims to improve campus air quality, enhance aesthetic appeal, and contribute to stress relief for both students and personnel.
Launched on February 14, 2024, during the President’s Day event, University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol said the project marks another step towards the objective of turning BukSU into a “green university.”
“We mark a significant step towards a greener BukSU, a greener tomorrow. This vertical garden isn’t just a collection of plants on a wall; it’s a symbol of our commitment to sustainable development, a cornerstone of a true green university,” Mirasol said.
Plants from the vertical garden are donated by the Malaybalay City Environment and Resources Office (CENRO) and Dr. Vivian P. Alberto.
“The vertical garden serves as a distinctive feature that enhances the visual charm of the campus,” said senior English Language student, Via Amor B. Emonaga.
Mr. Raymond C. Singsing, a landscaper of the General Services Unit, is responsible for the maintenance and sustainability of the plants.
“As early as 4:00 in the morning, I regularly water the plants to ensure they stay hydrated. After several months, I will incorporate additional fertilizer to support the plants’ health and continued growth,” Singsing explained.
