Better Normal: 190 BukSU HMD interns train in four modes

MALAYBALAY CITY (OP-IPS) The Hospitality Management Department has deployed a total of 190 interns for their on-the-job training, from a selection of four modes to address the restrictions brought by the pandemic this year.

The department offered the four options as it adopted proactive strategies to ensure the students proceed with their internship experience without compromising their health and safety amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The department asked the students to choose the mode that best fits their need and availability while ensuring they further enrich their skills and knowledge.

Majority or 139 out of the 190 interns opted to take the E-modular and Virtual-Assisted Program, which is a pre-professional simulated work involvement that allows students to gain experience in managing tourism or hospitality-related businesses.

The option allowed interns who aspired to be tourism and hospitality industry leaders and entrepreneurs to participate in and engage in the real-world in a virtual yet competitive environment. The university has secured a partnership with the Hospitality Institute of America-Philippines Inc. The institute envisions itself as “an internationally recognized center of excellence for Hotel, Culinary and Tourism training and skills assessments services.”

A group of 17 interns opted for Home-Based Entrepreneurship, which would allow to to gain experience managing tourism/hospitality related businesses. The mode is ideal for students who wished to pursue careers as future business owners or entrepreneurs.

Ten interns opted to take the third mode, Commissioned Work from Home. The interns will be assigned to a partner-company or practicum venues under a unique Memorandum of Agreement/Memorandum of Understanding/Letter of Undertaking (MOA/MOU/LOU). The university and partner companies have agreed to recognize commissioned work from home as part of the practicum of students, provided that these online or virtual works are relevant to business procedures, industry growth, professional development, and essential to students’ practicum learning goals. For this option, BukSU worked with the City Government of Malaybalay.

There were 24 interns who opted for the Limited Face-to-Face modality, where they are required to render 300-hour internship in various areas of tourism and hospitality industry. In this mode, the interns apply their formal education in a real work environment. This is done by following instructions given in the training logbook, with an emphasis on working skills.

For this mode, interns were deployed in DOT-accredited establishments prescribed by CHED such as Dahilayan Forest Park in Manolo Fortich and Jocel’s Gardens in Valencia City.

The department has assigned internship coordinators to ensure the students will be strictly monitored and guided; Ms. Trizia Fesuel Moreno – Labadan for E modular and Virtual Assisted Program; Ms. Annie Leah Roxann L. Emata for the Home Based Entrepreunership; Ms. Kathryn Faith E. Amarille for the Commissioned Work from Home arrangements; and Ms. Christie M. Esperon and Ms. Irene C. Gambi for the Limited Face-to-Face on-site internship.

The Hospitality Management Department acknowledged the full support of the university administration led by Dr. Oscar B. Cabañelez to realize the endeavor.

“We are also optimistic and hopeful that the chosen modalities by the students will best facilitate learning amidst the global pandemic,” the department said in a statement (Marven Jan Nadela/COB-HMD).
