MALAYBALAY CITY (IPS)- The College of Business’ extension project with the city’s Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives (IPMR) is commendable and has produced excellent results, said Caraga State University’s Dr. Lilia Z. Boyles, team leader of AACCUP accreditation team surveying Area 6 or extension.

Dr. Boyles led a team who visited the extension projects of COB and the College of Social Development and Technology on September 4, 2019 as part of the accreditation activities.

She added that the project was able to achieve its objectives in equipping Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives (IPMR).

The general objective of the program is to assist IPMRs in Malaybalay City to become productive and instrumental mediators between their communities and the government. The project involved the conduct by the department of training and seminars related to local legislation, cultural and traditional value system, gender and development, conflict settlement, IP empowerment and marital disputes.

The accreditor also suggested to capacitate the representatives with livelihood programs, observe gender-sensitive or gender equality among barangay officials and wished for sustenance and continuation of the program.

BukSU’s Government Affairs Department has extended its helping hand to the community through its extension programs and is currently engaged with the office of Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives (IPMR). The university signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the IPMRs of Malaybalay City to equip them to bring the voice of their respective communities.

Based on the needs assessment survey conducted by the department, many problems were not properly addressed by the government due to misrepresentation and miscommunication of the representatives of these indigenous communities. Most of them cannot properly articulate what are the needs of their barangays and communities thus leading to the inadequacy of solutions.

The accreditors also visited another extension project of the college, the PWD maka trabaho, PWD maka-negosyo, with the persons with disabilities (PWD) in partnership with the City Government of Malaybalay, Parents’ Mobilization Action Group (PMAG) and JCI Bukidnon Maragway. It is a training and education program instituted to broaden the knowledge of the PWDs to meet and exceed the expectations of the visitors to the area, deliver better quality service to tourists and to generate income and employment in the host community.

In response, Dr. Lesley Casas Lubos, BukSU extension director, affirmed that the program would continue gearing towards sustainable development locally and nationally. The site visit ended with closing remarks coming from Dr. Nelia S. Raganas, another accreditor from CarSU. She said the project can reshape the community by empowering the IPs.

As aimed by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines Incorporated (AACCUP), sustaining the extension programs has been included as a priority for improvement as mentioned by Dr. Angel C. Alcala, President of the National Network of Quality Assurance Agencies (NNQAA) in his speech during the 30th AACCUP Annual Conference. (Bryan M. Wenceslao)
