MALAYBALAY CITY (IPS) Eighty three members of the University Student Government (USG) of Bukidnon State University completed a four-day leadership-seminar workshop dubbed ʺBukSUans: Leadership Towards Global Competitivenessʺ. ,
The USG is composed of the Supreme Student Council and the Student Body Organization (SBO) of the different colleges.
The seminar-workshop, held on June 4 to 7, 2018, was organized to equip the student leaders with the skills of organizing their plans for the whole year for a convenient implementation and monitoring of their activities, according to a report from the Office of the Student Services (OSS).
University officials led the resource persons for the seminar-workshop, which was meant to help students align the direction of their respective organizations to that of the university.
Ms. Rosanna S. Generato, the University Planning Officer, shared the new Vision and Mission statements as well as the strategic goals and objectives of the university.
Ms. Generato challenged the student leaders to align to the university’s strategic objectives. She said the university has also aligned its objectives to the Philippine Development, which in turn is aligned to achieving the United Nationsʾ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ms. Katherine Pabillaran – Bandas, the University Accountant, gave an overview of financial processes of the university especially in accessing funds for student activities.
Dr. Lalevie C. Lubos, the Dean of the Student Services, discussed on ethical leadership and the roles of student leaders in helping the university attain its vision.
Ms. Jasmin N. Israel, the OSS faculty associate, served as the seminar-workshopʾs main facilitator, especially during the planning sessions.
Student leaders crafted their organization’s comprehensive plan which includes the annual operation and budget plan.
With BukSUʾs thrust to produce globally competent graduates, the OSS intends to capacitate students to become better youth leaders of the university and eventually become better professionals, who are capable of working competitively with other professionals from the rest of the world.
Mr. Ariel Torayno, one of the 12 elected senators of the Supreme Student Council, said he valued much the new things he learned through the seminar workshop. Among them, he added, are preparing the council resolution and activity designs for the different activities.
The resolution is the mechanism to ensure the project went through deliberation and proper authorization, he said. The activity design is to ensure the resources are allocated and used properly, like the budget.
According to the OSS, student leadership is one of the avenues to develop the capabilities of the students by training them to become effective team players.
