A video circulating on social media shows a woman in a jersey shirt frantically performing chest compressions on an unconscious person, while some residents gather around and others can be heard crying.
The woman has been identified as Julla Angela Daculiat, an incoming sophomore Nursing student at Bukidnon State University. According to Daculiat, she was practicing volleyball with her team at the court in Crossing, Libona, Bukidnon last July 26, 2024, when they heard a mother desperately calling for help from a house behind the court.
According to reports, the child’s neck had become entangled in a hammock string, causing him to lose consciousness and be in grave danger.
“The boy had no pulse during my initial assessment, prompting me to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for the ambulance to arrive,” said Daculiat.
Daculiat said she first learned CPR from her mother, who is a nurse. She also received training from the Philippine Red Cross. Her skills were further reinforced through her studies at the College of Nursing (CON) and during her NSTP-ROTC classes at BukSU.
The subsequent scenes of the video show the boy successfully revived and clearly conscious after around six minutes of CPR. He was later taken to the nearest hospital and is now in stable condition.
Daculiat earned praise not only from the boy’s family but also from netizens who called her a “hero” for saving his life.
“I’m so happy and grateful to God that the boy finally showed signs of life. The situation was so overwhelming that it brought me to tears, and I felt a huge sigh of relief knowing he was safe,” she said.
Her family at BukSU’s College of Nursing also expressed pride in her actions.
“Ms. Daculiat is truly commendable and inspiring for her brave and selfless actions in saving the child’s life. We are so proud of her. Her actions exemplify the true spirit of BukSU and demonstrate what it means to be part of the College of Nursing,” said CON Dean Dr. Ma. Algerica T. Cuenco.
Daculiat hopes that this incident will raise public awareness about the importance of learning basic life support skills and that such knowledge can be lifesaving in emergency situations. (BukSU-Information Unit)
