The BukSU Human Resource and Management Unit (HRMU) went live on Facebook for its first episode of a mental health talk show for university personnel, titled ‘Heart Talk’, broadcasted on February 14, 2024.
The program was hosted by HRMU Director, Dr. Xyle Fe A. Verbal, who engaged university personnel as guests on the show. The episode featured insights from a married couple and a single parent to address marital and parental concerns.
Sharing their experiences as a couple, Mr. Silverio and Dr. Joy Amor Montales emphasized the importance of communication in their relationship.
“Communication is important. In our case, we strive to talk and solve our problems before sundown. In times when we’re stressed out from a certain day, we stroll around places with our children and take time to chill,” the couple said.
To flourish in their relationship, the couple strived to set aside time for themselves.
“We also set a time for us. Just the two of us. We planned a trip and entrusted our kids to our parents while we were out of town,” they added.
Ms. Angel R. Ucat, a single parent to her 12-year-old daughter, shared her experiences managing the demands of commuting between her workplace in Malaybalay and her residence in Misamis Oriental.
“I traveled from Malaybalay to Misamis Oriental after the last day of the workweek and left home for Malaybalay early in the morning on a Monday. That was my routine before I moved in here [in Malaybalay],” Ucat said.
“I owe my parents for taking care of [my daughter], Joanna. They were there to help me raise a responsible child. I, myself, was under my parents’ roof and have experienced their discipline installed in me,” she added.
To cope with overwhelming emotions, Ucat shared her practice of reaching out to her mother for support.
“When things overwhelmed me, I used to call my mother and say, ‘Ma gusto ko muhilak’ [Ma, I wanted to cry]. And she will just be there on the phone, staying with me when I want to,” she added.
The talk show episode emphasized the importance of demonstrating love through actions for both partners and children.
“We should be the love we never receive,” Verbal said, encouraging viewers to embody the love they seek from others. (BukSU-Information Unit)
