Bukidnon State University (BukSU) reinforced its commitment to developing future-ready and socially responsible graduates through two comprehensive Futures Thinking and SDG Awareness Sessions held on November 19 and December 3, 2025. The events equipped BukSU student leaders and main campus student interns with foresight skills, leadership insights, and a deeper understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The first leg of the activity was held on November 19, where student leaders from various organizations participated.
The session introduced the foundational concepts of futures thinking, including signals and drivers of change, the futures triangle, and scenario building, highlighting the importance of anticipatory leadership in navigating an evolving academic and social environment.
The training highlighted that effective leadership today requires flexibility, foresight, and the ability to design programs responsive to emerging needs within the university and the wider community.
The second session took place on December 3 at the BukSU Mini Theater for main campus student interns, featuring a full-day series of talks led by university officials and subject experts.
University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol extended support to the event, emphasizing the role of foresight and responsible action in shaping students’ future careers and contributions to society.
The sessions began with Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican, Director of ESCU, who shared insights on the importance of continuous community engagement, emphasizing that service to communities should not end with graduation but remain an integral part of professional and civic life.
Dr. Lorenzo B. Dinlayan III, SLDEVU Director, highlighted the importance of values-based, adaptable leadership in uncertain environments.
Ms. Nova Thirdy E. Agravante, Information Officer I, elaborated on the commitment to SDGs, encouraging students to connect their academic and internship experiences with global development priorities.
Ms. Astred Jill A. Catolpos, Head of the Presidential Technical Operations, provided an introduction to foresight concepts and the importance of identifying trends shaping the future of work and community life.
Participants engaged in guided reflections and activities to help them apply futures-thinking tools to real-life scenarios. Students shared their impressions, acknowledging the relevance of foresight and SDGs in shaping their future roles.
Mr. Averel Apique, a BSBA student, reflected on how the session enhanced his understanding of communication and its relationship to the SDGs. He noted that the activities helped him see the importance of foresight and effective communication as they prepares to take on external engagements after graduation.
Ms. Jelleosa Bete, a Community Development student, expressed that the session supported her ongoing search for personal advocacy. She emphasized the usefulness of futures thinking, guiding her future decisions and career direction. She also recognized how being attentive to assigned tasks reveals which SDGs are addressed in their work.
The two-part series successfully highlighted BukSU’s mission to cultivate graduates equipped not only with academic knowledge but with the capacity to anticipate change, engage ethically with their communities, and contribute meaningfully to national and global development goals. As the university continues to pursue its Smart BukSU vision, these initiatives affirm its commitment to preparing students for the complexities and opportunities of the future. (Astred Jill A.
