Three guards honored for upholding BukSU vehicle entry rules

A vehicle stops. A window rolls down. Security Head Guard Joel Menisterio repeats the same reminder he has given many times: no gate pass, no entry.

It is a rule that some contest, yet he must enforce it each day. This familiar interaction at Bukidnon State University recently led to recognition for him and two colleagues.

Menisterio, along with Security Guard Jason Calderon and Security Guard Jesher Aston, received the Gantimpala Agad Award on December 1 for their enforcement of the university’s No Gate Pass, No Entry Policy for motor vehicles. The awarding was held at the Office of the University President.

According to the Human Resource and Management Unit (HRMU), the three were recognized for their vigilance, courage, and professionalism in carrying out campus regulations. HRMU said that they “have set a gold standard in service, embodying the highest ideals of accountability, dedication, and guardianship of university values.”

Menisterio has worked at BukSU for more than two years. He said the recognition from the university was entirely unexpected, and that he is genuinely happy to receive it.

The policy requires vehicles to secure a gate pass sticker issued by the Records and Management Unit. Menisterio said that part of his everyday work is explaining this rule to drivers.

“[Adlaw-adlaw mi gapasabot sa mga musulod nga naay polisiya ang university nga dili makasulod ang sakyanan kung walay gatepass], We are routinely explaining the university policy to those entering, clarifying that vehicles without a gate pass will not be permitted entry,” he said.

The guard also noted that reactions to the rule are not always calm. When faced with public hostility, Menisterio emphasized that security guards strive for professionalism, patience, and adherence to security training.

“[Bisan paman nga masuko sa amo ang driver nga dili makasulod, taas among pasensya sa ila kay gitudluan pod mi sa prinsipyo nga maximum tolerance. Kinahanglan namo mapasabot nga kami gabuhaton namo ang trabaho, aron hapsay] Although drivers who are denied entry may express anger, we maintain maximum patience with them. This is because we are trained on maximum tolerance. We must explain that we are simply executing our duties to ensure that the campus remains orderly and safe,” Menisterio added.

BukSU announced in July that university access for motor vehicles requires a mandatory gate pass sticker.

“The No Gate Pass, No Entry Policy ensures that every person or vehicle entering the gate is identified, verified, and recorded,” said Aldren G. Dagaang, Gatepass Issuance Officer of the Records and Management Unit (RMU).

“The policy ensured actions, regardless of the rank, position, or influence of those involved,” Office of the Chief of Administrative Officer (CAO) reiterated.

“The access granted by the gate pass sticker applies exclusively to the motor vehicle itself, not to the passengers,” the CAO – Administrative Services Division emphasized during the separate orientation series facilitated for the employees and tenants, parents and guardians, including the students and other stakeholders.

The Gantimpala Agad Award centered on three men, but it also honors the dedication of BukSU’s security personnel who enforce rules and help maintain order on campus. (BukSU-Information Unit)
