Bukidnon State University’s (BukSU) Automotive Technology Department chairperson and inventor Dr. Rene M. Chavez received top honors at the 2025 ClusteRICE–Mindanao Cluster of the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) held on Oct. 7–8 at the Philippine Science High School–Central Mindanao Campus Gymnasium in Balo-i, Lanao del Norte.
Chavez, together with co-innovator Dr. Gerwine J. Medio of Cebu Technological University, developed A Device for Car Charging and Battery Monitoring System, which won first place under the Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model. The entry competed against three others from Region XI and the CARAGA Region. The device aims to prevent sudden engine stoppages and allows real-time monitoring of a vehicle’s charging system using sensor-based technology.
The same invention previously earned first place in the 2025 ClusteRICE–NCR competition under the Banghay Award for Outstanding Industrial Design.
The Department of Science and Technology–Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST–TAPI) conferred the recognition, which included a ₱25,000 cash prize and a Certificate of Recognition.
Chavez said the recognition represents not only his work but also the collective effort of BukSU and the broader Mindanao innovation community. “This award is not only for me but for the entire BukSU community and for Mindanao. It shows that with innovation and support, we can compete at the national level,” he said.
Following his win in the Mindanao cluster, Chavez’s project will advance to the 2026 National Invention Contest and Exhibits, where it will be evaluated alongside other national entries. Bukidnon State University recognized the award as part of its ongoing efforts to promote research and innovation among its faculty and students. (Mr. Nicolas S.
