Bukidnon State University (BukSU) conducted an in-house review of curricular-based research proposals to help faculty researchers strengthen their studies and align them with institutional and national priorities, on March 5, 2025.
Organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Innovations (OVPREI) and the Research and Development Unit (R&DU), the initiative provided faculty from the main and satellite campuses an opportunity to refine their research work.
The review was held in response to the Department of Budget and Management-Commission on Higher Education (DBM-CHED) Joint Circular No. 3, Series of 2022, which outlines the new guidelines for faculty reclassification. The updated guidelines place greater emphasis on research output, making curricular-based research a key component of faculty advancement.
“These guidelines outline a system that assigns different weights to the Key Result Areas (KRAs) among faculty members—Instruction, Research, Extension, and Professional Development—depending on the faculty rank. More research-oriented outputs are expected from faculty as they progress through their ranks,” said Ms. Joan M. Recente, the R&DU Director.
A total of 142 research proposals were evaluated across five parallel sessions. According to OVPREI, the volume of submissions was one of the highest recorded in the university’s history.
“This is a testament to your commitment to research and academic excellence. To our evaluators, your insights will sharpen our researchers’ ideas, strengthen their methodologies and ensure that these studies can be done within one year, especially for assistant professors down to university professors,” said VPREI Dr. Carina Joane V. Barroso.
University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol said that research extends beyond academic requirements, promoting discovery, skill development, and problem-solving.
“May we be reminded that just as how we strive for sustainable research initiatives, may we also impart feasible and practical inter-sectoral and social research outputs that will impact people’s awareness of the demand for a particular research plan, assist in the delivery of resources and services, and strengthen community participation for sustainability and self-reliance,” said Mirasol.
Through regular faculty research reviews, BukSU aims to cultivate a strong research culture that contributes to curriculum development, institutional growth, and societal impact. (With report from Zyrha Jane B. Edlang, IU intern)
