2024 BukSU cultural research studies eye traditions in Kaamulan Festival

The Language and Letters Department (LLD) and the Social Science Department (SSD) of Bukidnon State University co-hosted a seminar-workshop on qualitative research in language and cultural studies. Held from April 18th to 20th, 2024, at the Graduate Studies Lawang, the event coincided with the celebration of Kaamulan 2024.

The seminar-workshop was hosted by the graduate studies of Doctor of Philosophy in English Language (PhEL), Master of Arts in English Language (MAEL), and Master in Sociology (MAS).

John Christopher B. Mesana, resource speaker equipped participants in qualitative research methods through a crash course. He then facilitated a workshop on writing for publication, specifically tailored to cultural studies research. Additionally, Mr. Mesana guided participants on data gathering methods for cultural festivals, culminating in a writing workshop and the presentation of cultural research proposals.

“In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to produce qualitative research exploring the connections between the language, culture and society, as it is timely as we continue to celebrate the Kaamulan, showcasing our culture to the wide audience including researchers,” remarked by Grenna Marie Joy Simene, LLD Head.

Dr. Salome L. Escalona, Program Head for PhEL and MAEL delivered the dean’s message on behalf of the College of Arts (CAS) dean Dr. Maribel G. Valdez.

“We hope that through these activities you will understand the nuance of language, culture and social dynamics,” dean said. 

The cultural research proposals of the faculty members for this year hoped to explore Bukidnon’s rich culture and tradition celebrated in Kaamulan reflecting Bukidnon’s way of life particularly on the local indigenous literary, dances, arts, and music.

Towards the last day of the events, participants were encouraged to do field work and field work reporting. 

 “The qualitative research approach, particularly its design and its alignment with the statement of the problem, offered valuable insights for me. While this was a refresher, the process of relearning proved to be highly beneficial, I’m now equipped with renewed knowledge and I am excited to apply qualitative methods in future research endeavors!” Dr. Joanna Ruth S.
