Bukidnon State University (BukSU) spearheaded a two-day Research Writeshop on Bibliometrics at the main campus and Veranda, Casisang on October 27-28, 2026 after yielding a surge in institutional research output and securing the 15th rank among the top 22 research universities in the Philippines, according to the latest Global Health Focus (GHF) metrics as of September 2026.
As stated by Joan M. Recente, Director for Research and Development Unit (RDU), the initiative aligned it with the BukSU’s Strategic Development Plan (SDP) designed to elevate the university’s academic reputation and upscale personnel research competencies.
Organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Innovations (OVPREI) through its specialized Research Centers, the capacity-building aimed to train Research Opportunities and Studies System (ROSS) II personnel, center directors, and faculty researchers in leveraging quantitative, citation-based bibliometric methodologies for high-impact journal submissions.
Recente further said that the advanced skill sets of the personnel are enriched through research project management, literature synthesis, quantitative bibliometric mapping, and strategic research planning.
Dr. Carina Joan V. Barroso, Vice President for Reseach, Extension and Innovations (VPREI) urged researchers to translate the time spent in the workshop into real academic growth and tangible, published research outputs.
“My challenge to everyone is simple: Ask questions, work with your data, and take advantage of the expertise of our speakers. Do not leave as the same researcher who entered this room today—leave with a new methodology, a new research idea, and the beginnings of your next Scopus-indexed publication,” Barroso said.
BukSU’s growth trajectory in Scopus-indexed research began from fewer than 10 Scopus-indexed publications, yet it achieved 128 indexings in 2026, bringing the university’s total cumulative output to 246 Scopus-indexed papers.
“If you look back at where we started we usually produced few Scopus-indexed papers annually,” shared Barroso. “And now, in 2026 alone, we were able to produce 128 Scopus-indexed papers for the university. That is because of all the hard work of our BukSU researchers.”
The writeshop brought together researchers and administrative heads across university units, including the Center for Local Governance (CLG), Center for Educational Analytics (CEA), Center for Mathematical Innovation (CMI), Center for Peace Studies (CPS), BukSU Studies Center (BSC), University Research and Growth Center (UGRC), and faculty researchers from the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and General Education (GE) departments.
External technical guidance was provided by Dr. Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno III, Founder of Global Health Focus, and Mr. Jericho Ogaya, who mentored participants through proposal development, dataset analytics, and manuscript structuring targeted for high-impact international journals.
“Bibliometrics is much more than just counting citations or looking at graphs; it is about seeing the bigger picture,” Barroso reading the message on behalf of University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol. “It shows us where our research can make the biggest difference, where we can connect with international collaborators, and how we can make BukSU’s voice seen and heard globally.”Participants delivered bibliometric research proposals, peer evaluations, and submission-ready manuscripts tailored to institutional and national research agendas.
