BukSU, UKSW complete first in-person Nursing COIL

Bukidnon State University (BukSU) and Indonesia’s Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW) completed their first in-person COIL program on Community Health Nursing from May 4–7, 2026 featuring academic and cultural engagements.

Faculty and nursing students from both universities engaged in a series of academic exchanges, cultural immersions, and community-based health nursing clinicals.

The program utilized lectures, research, and clinical benchmarking to emphasize how international partnerships prepare nursing students to become globally competent, culturally responsive, and community-oriented healthcare professionals.

The UKSW delegation was composed of Dr. Priska Lydia S. Pulungan, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences; Dr. Maria Dyah Kurniasari, Head of the Nursing Science Study Program; and student representatives Mr. Raditia Pernando and Ms. Frenska Ryachel Paskalisa. During their stay, the delegates participated in various academic, clinical, research, and cultural immersion activities while experiencing the hospitality and culture of Bukidnon.

To gain firsthand experience with local healthcare delivery, the international delegates visited Barangays Sumpong, Kalasungay, and Barangay 9. These clinical benchmarking activities allowed the visitors to observe public health nursing initiatives and community-based healthcare strategies in a local setting. The visit was further enriched by a cultural immersion tour, showcasing the heritage of the region.

The engagement extended to the classroom as Dr. Pulungan and Dr. Kurniasari led a lecture-discussion at the College of Nursing New Building Amphitheater. Addressing BukSU nursing students, the Indonesian scholars shared insights into Indonesia’s healthcare system, global perspectives in community health nursing, and cross-cultural healthcare delivery.

According to the college, the activity further enriched the students’ understanding of international nursing practices and strengthened global academic engagement between the two institutions.

“Through collaborations in community health nursing, research engagement, visiting professorships, cultural immersion, and student exchange, BukSU and UKSW demonstrated how international partnerships can help shape nurses who are not only globally competent, but also compassionate, culturally responsive, and community-driven,” BukSU CON Dean Dr. Ma. Algerica T. Cuenco shared. (Mariz Rochelle C. Sedon/College of Nursing faculty; OVPREI Management Staff Head)
