Bukidnon State University (BukSU) has been named among the top higher education institutions in the country in the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools (NSSEFS), a program led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through its Environmental Management Bureau.
The NSSEFS identifies schools with environmental programs integrated into operations, curriculum, research, extension, and administration. The search covers elementary, high school, and college categories, with selected institutions recognized nationwide.
BukSU, together with Central Mindanao University and Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, secured spots in the top five of the colleges and universities category. The result points to the participation of institutions from Northern Mindanao in the national recognition program.
The award was received by BukSU President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol and Chief Administrative Officer for the Administrative Services Division, Ms. Rosanna S. Generato, during the awarding ceremony held in Quezon City, on April 22, 2026.
“Smart BukSU advances not only in innovation but in purpose—where sustainability is not a program, but a way of life and a shared culture we live every day,” Mirasol said.
Prior to the recognition, BukSU underwent a multi-stage evaluation process. The university was first identified among the top seven colleges and universities shortlisted for validation by the National Board of Judges. This was followed by a field validation visit conducted on March 26, 2026, by accreditors from the Philippine Network of Educators on Environment, who assessed the university’s environmental programs, waste management systems, and energy efficiency initiatives.
BukSU’s entry outlined several campus-wide environmental programs implemented in recent years. These include the Zero Waste Management Program for a Green Bukidnon State University, which focuses on waste reduction, recycling, composting, and proper disposal systems. The program was developed in response to increasing waste generation and local regulatory requirements on solid waste management.
The university also reported the implementation of the Pollution Control and Hazardous Management Program, which addresses the handling and disposal of hazardous materials used in laboratories and campus operations. In addition, BukSU has implemented energy efficiency and water conservation initiatives, including energy audits, installation of LED lighting and solar panels, and rainwater harvesting systems.
These initiatives form part of the university’s “Green UniverCity Program,” which integrates sustainability into campus planning, instruction, research, and community engagement.
The NSSEFS selection process includes document screening, evaluation by a national board of judges, and site validation of shortlisted institutions before final selection. The program was launched in 2009 and supports national and regional environmental education frameworks, including Republic Act 9512 and the ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plan.
