Five innovators from Bukidnon State University (BukSU) were honored with the WURI Prize for Excellence in Innovation for their outstanding initiatives that were showcased in the 2025 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).
The awardees are Dr. Helen P. Garcia, Director of the Planning and Development Unit; Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican, Director of the Extension Services and Community Engagement Unit; Mr. Donald P. Donasco, Head of the Information and Communications Technology Unit ; Ms. Astred Jill A. Catolpos, Head of the Presidential Technical Operations; and Mr. Joseph L. Gelacio, Program Chair for Global Excellence. Their innovative contributions have significantly advanced BukSU’s practices in teaching, research, and community engagement. These efforts greatly contributed to the university’s improved standing in the international WURI rankings.
In recognition of their achievement, Certificates of Appreciation were conferred on them during a ceremony held on September 30, 2025, at the Office of the President Conference Room. University President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol expressed gratitude for their dedication and emphasized the importance of their work in strengthening BukSU’s global reputation.
“This recognition from WURI is a milestone for BukSU. Your innovations demonstrate how creativity and collaboration can lead to meaningful impact for our students, communities, and higher education as a whole,” Dr. Mirasol said.
WURI is a global university ranking system that evaluates higher education institutions based on their real-world contributions to society through innovation, rather than traditional metrics such as publication counts or reputation.
In the 2025 WURI Rankings, BukSU secured 161st place among 1,253 universities worldwide, a remarkable rise from its 268th position in 2024. The university also excelled in several categories, including 16th in Cost Effectiveness / Benefit Management, 22nd in Technology and Infrastructure, and 43rd in Student Support and Engagement.
Through recognitions such as the WURI Prize, BukSU reaffirms its commitment to building a culture of innovation that supports transformative education and contributes to sustainable development, both locally and globally. (Joanne Vivien B. Necosia, Director, PMS)
