Eight faculty members from Bukidnon State University participated in the Training on Geostatistics and Wave Propagation held on March 27–28, 2025, at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP).
The training was designed to build participants’ proficiency in machine learning applications for seismic risk evaluation and to introduce geostatistical and geospatial analysis techniques for landslide hazard mapping and spatial risk assessment.
The workshop was conducted in collaboration with Caraga State University (CSU), University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), and Bukidnon State University (BukSU), aimed at enhancing technical competencies in seismic and landslide hazard assessment.
Faculty members from the Mathematics Department, Natural Sciences Department and Electronics Technology Department Dr. Zeny L. Maureal, Dr. Lezel M. Tutanes, Dr. Noel B. Lacpao, Mr. Mark Ivan Arcillas, Mr. Rey Carl Tiu, Engr. Lynn Remo, Engr. Manuel Chad G. Agurob, and Ms. Meliusa Marie Kitche underwent intensive hands-on coding exercises using Python and R, applying real-world data for earthquake-induced landslide prediction.
Participants engaged in practical sessions on seismic wave propagation modeling, including numerical simulations and their integration with landslide prediction models.
Risk Evaluation looks at how likely and how damaging landslides are in an area, while a Geostatistical and Geospatial Analysis is maps and statistical tools to see patterns and predict where landslides might happen. (Queency P. Gemina, Research Centers Staff)
