MALAYBALAY CITY (IPS) Award winning student Vincent Jhun O. Dorias, a fourth year, Bachelor of Secondary Education student majoring in English said he was mum when classmates asked about how he balances between academics and extra-curricular activities.

“I seriously could not answer them because I don’t know the answer. One thing … if you’re driven and motivated for something, you’d really pursue it regardless of how hard and challenging that may be, he said.”

Dorias cited he had his own share of breakdowns; cried for a failed exam, failed to answer a teacher’s question and got tired of accomplishing tasks. But he said he never gave up.

He said he is also not a perfect son, student and leader.

“I have committed mistakes too. Humans as we are, we are shaped by our mistakes. With our mistakes – we can call ourselves – humans,” Dorias said in an interview after he was awarded as one of the Top 10 Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines.

Dorias is also a senior student leader who serves as President of Educationalist, an organization for the COE-BSE students and at the same a college student body organization officer. The model student has been a consistent academic awardee since his first year.

The Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines is an annual nationwide contest organized by the Order of the Knights of Rizal. It is chartered under Republic Act No. 646 to recognize Filipino students who epitomizes Rizalian qualities and leadership excellence. It has been conducted for 30 years and for the first time, a BukSU student was nominated.
Along with other nominees from different universities in the country, Dorias went through a strenuous screening procedure with criteria consisting of academic excellence, student leadership, co-curricular activities, community involvements, communication skills, knowledge of Rizal and personality projection.

The first phase of the screening was writing an essay followed by a panel interview with a judge from the Court of Appeals, mayors and deans. The awarding was held at Barbara’s Resto in Intramuros, Manila on December 30, 2018. (Ms. Ritchelee B. Alugar, COE for BukSU OP-Information and Publication Service)
