BukSU Graduates Showcase New Stole Design on Regalia

For many years, graduates of Bukidnon State University donned black togas with red stoles during graduation ceremonies. The stoles featured the university seal on the left side and the letters B-S-U on the right.

However, at this year’s 90th Commencement Exercises, graduates proudly walked down the red-carpeted aisle of the gymnasium wearing a newly designed academic stole as part of their regalia.

A graduation stole is a decorative vestment worn by students during graduation ceremonies. It is typically a long, narrow piece of cloth draped over the shoulders and falls down the front of the academic gown. They add a personalized touch to the traditional graduation attire and signify various accomplishments and honors.

The new academic stole of BukSU is a long strip of red cloth adorned with the university seal on the left side and embroidered geometric motifs that signify the rich cultural heritage of Bukidnon. The ethnic-inspired patterns incorporate different colors, each representing the various academic programs offered by the university.

In March of last year, the Office of the President designated the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs to spearhead the technical working group to redesign the graduation regalia. The new design was subsequently approved by the Board of Regents and is set to debut with the Class of 2024, coinciding with the university’s centennial founding anniversary.

In a gesture of respect towards the Indigenous Peoples communities of the province, the new stole, adorned with prominent ethnic designs, underwent a customary ritual in August 2023.

“At BukSU, we conduct rituals to introduce new initiatives, particularly those related to Bukidnon culture, to our stakeholders and IP partners,” said Ms. Loreta Sol L. Dinlayan, Director of the Bukidnon Studies Center.

The stole is currently in the process of obtaining copyright registration to protect its unique design and prevent unauthorized reproduction.

The new, original design of the stole embodies the deep cultural heritage of Bukidnon State University, serving as a powerful symbol of pride and identity for the graduates. It reflects the university’s commitment to honoring the rich traditions of the Indigenous Peoples of Bukidnon while aligning with BukSU’s tradition of educational excellence, making it a meaningful and relevant part of the graduates’ academic journey and achievements.
