Residents of Sitio Kiito, Barangay Can-ayan will gain access to a solar charging station through Project Kanunay, a Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) initiative implemented by Bukidnon State University (BukSU) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Malaybalay City.
The project was launched during the ceremonial turnover of project funds on July 16, 2026, which signaled the start of the CEST initiative for the Indigenous Peoples (IP) community in Sitio Kiito.
The project seeks to provide a reliable and sustainable source of electricity to support livelihood activities, education, communication, and emergency response in the community, which has limited access to essential energy services.
DOST allocated ₱365,600.00 for BukSU’s implementation of Project Kanunay. The LGU of Malaybalay City also committed ₱470,000.00 in counterpart funding for the infrastructure required to establish the solar charging station.
The project is led by the Electronics Technology Department of the College of Technologies with support from BukSU’s Extension Services and Community Engagement Unit (ESCEU). It serves as the university’s extension initiative under the DOST-CEST Program.
Through Project Kanunay, BukSU applies science, technology, and innovation to community-based interventions that address identified local needs.
The solar charging station is expected to support livelihood activities, improve access to essential services, contribute to disaster preparedness, and encourage self-reliance among the Indigenous Peoples of Sitio Kiito. (Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican/ Director, ESCEU)
