The Elementary School Laboratory Department of Bukidnon State University demonstrated that earthquake preparedness goes beyond the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” response during the 1st Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on March 11, 2026.
Grade school pupils performed the earthquake safety procedure, wore their safety helmets, and executed a quick and orderly evacuation. Teachers conducted head counts and self-checks while ensuring that all pupils safely reached the designated evacuation area.

The drill also strengthened the value of preparedness and awareness among teachers, parents, and pupils, while giving young learners the opportunity to experience how to listen to authorities, follow instructions, and remain calm instead of panicking during emergencies.
Under the leadership of Department Head Ms. Rachel Joan T. Toledo, the entire evacuation was completed in less than ten minutes, successfully moving pupils, faculty, staff, canteen personnel, and parents away from the ESL building.

A highlight of the drill was the family reunification procedure, where teachers demonstrated the proper endorsement of pupils to their parents using the official reunification form.
The activity was supported by the University DRRM Unit, headed by Mr. Rhondell M. Paraiso, together with two teams of BukSU Project Michelangelo volunteers who assisted as safety marshals and facilitators.

The drill was evaluated by FO3 Brent Clyde Suico, team leader from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Arlene Mae Neri from the City DRRMO Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The activity concluded with a feedback and evaluation session to further strengthen the university’s disaster preparedness initiatives. (Rhondell M. Paraiso/ Head, BukSU DRRM Unit)
