The descendants of William Henry Pickell Jr. were honored guests at Bukidnon State University’s (BukSU) Grand Centennial Celebration opening program on December 2, 2024.
Pickell, who served as the first administrator of BukSU when it was established as the Bukidnon Provincial High School in 1924, was celebrated for his contributions to the institution.
A highlight of the event was the soft launch of the coffee table book, Pickell’s Legacy, authored by Dr. Mercidita S. Villamayor. Additionally, the Pickell family received a copy of the souvenir book A Tribute to William Henry Pickell, which details the University’s efforts to trace the family’s lineage in the Philippines and the United States.
“This book is a symbol of recognition for my grandfather, who played a significant role in building this great institution in 1924. It is a tremendous honor for our entire family,” said Pickell’s granddaughter, Ms. Rose Ang.
With the centennial theme, “A Century of Excellence: Retrospecting the Past, Prospecting the Future,” the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Hazel Jean M. Abejuela, emphasized BukSU’s commitment to continuous growth.
“Today is not just about looking back. It is also about looking forward with aspirations to shape the next hundred years of Bukidnon State University,” she said.
The celebration included the unveiling of a Centennial Marker in front of the Bukidnon Studies Center Building.
BukSU President, Dr. Joy M. Mirasol, expressed her gratitude for the generations who contributed to the university’s progress.
“As we culminate a year of centennial celebrations, my heart is full of gratitude for the generations who have shaped BukSU’s story with humble yet unwavering efforts. BukSU has grown into an institution that touches lives far beyond the borders of Bukidnon,” Dr. Mirasol said.
The centennial festivities will continue throughout December, featuring activities such as the Bansagen Awards 2024, the inaugural Luminary Alumni Awards, and the Grand Alumni Homecoming. (BukSU-Information Unit)
