BukSU COL, IALU Strengthens Tie with National Taiwan Ocean University

Faculty members from Bukidnon State University’s College of Law (COL), along with a representative from the International Affairs and Linkages Unit (IALU), visited National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) in Keelung City, Taiwan, on October 28, 2024, for a benchmarking activity aimed at strengthening academic and cultural partnerships.

COL Dean Atty. Ophelia Pilar R. Zamora, together with Judge Ma. Theresa A. Camannong, Attys. Ana R. Bonita, Januaree Ann S. Llorico, Flaviano T. Gapol Jr. , Burt M. Estrada, Jacinth Felice L. Maristela, and Shylla Fe C. Daypuyat-Torres, and Program Chair on Faculty Mobility of the International Affairs and Linkages Unit (IALU) Ms. Rachel-Anne S. Valera were welcomed by Professor Hui-Chin Su, the Director of NTOU’s Institute of the Law of the Sea (ILS), together with faculty members.

Established in 1977, the ILS is committed to the research and education of marine law to develop individuals who specialize in cross-field maritime issues and the law of the sea. Various disciplines, including environmental science, policy studies, and international relations, have been incorporated into marine law education by their faculty.

BukSU’s delegates were also exposed to advanced research techniques and methodologies used in marine law studies.

“Through benchmarking in Taiwan, I gained a broader perspective on the role of legal education. I realized that BukSU College of Law has the potential to produce not only skilled legal practitioners but also future leaders, policymakers, and administrators who will shape the government and private sector,” said Zamora.

“This understanding will allow us to enhance our programs and better equip our students to meet the evolving demands of the legal profession,” she added.

The delegates also engaged in a cultural immersion experience to enhance their comprehension of Taiwan’s traditions and heritage. They gained a firsthand understanding of the vibrant cultural landscape of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung by participating in local cultural activities, sampling traditional and local Taiwanese cuisine, and visiting historical locations.

“With Taiwan being a global hub for maritime studies and law, the benchmarking session offered valuable insights into innovative teaching methodologies, curriculum design, and research advancements that could benefit BukSU’s law program,” said Valera.

Facilitated by the Office of the 2nd District Representative of Bukidnon and supported by BukSU President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol, the benchmarking initiative highlights the commitment of local leaders to advancing educational standards and fostering international collaboration.
