MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION MAJOR IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Program Description:

The program features nationally known faculty members whose expertise includes computer assisted language learning curriculum design, English for academic purposes, English as an international language, English grammar and grammar for ELT, intercultural rhetoric, interlanguage pragmatics, language testing and assessment, materials development, nonnative English speakers in ELT, second language acquisition, second language phonology, and second language writing.

The ELT master’s specialization stresses understanding of the role and function of English language teaching as it relates to the political and social climate of today’s world. A strong interest in intercultural communication and in the interaction of social behavior and language form a dynamic backdrop to innovative and fundamental aspects of teacher preparation.

Goals of the Course:

1. Provide ELT teachers with knowledge and skills in teaching English as a second language and applying these to strengthen their competence in teaching the subject.
2. Develop and enhance skills in using the English language through poems, songs, stories, essays, etc.
3. Provide intensive English Language Skills building among teachers and students and share this expertise to others
4. To turn out graduates who are competent in teaching content and in using effective strategies.

The English Language Teaching program aims to:

1. To utilize current strategies and techniques of language teaching and to apply these to various levels of competencies among the learners.
2. To utilize current trends in language testing in assessing language acquisition and learning through specific techniques.
3. To apply strategies in teaching the various aspects of teaching reading and literature in a bilingual setting.
4. To develop skills in assisting the teachers of English in the areas of language teaching strategies, and evaluation and testing through an action plan.
5. To develop research skills in the students through mini-studies related to the different courses, including individual research for related literature and group studies whenever possible.

MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION MAJOR IN GENERAL SCIENCE

Program Description

The program offers advanced courses in science education. These courses are programmed to take care of the curricular needs of the teachers who teach either biological or physical science in the elementary or secondary school levels. It focuses on science content, teaching pedagogy and learning activities and methodologies, which will help develop the teacher’s competence in other academic related functions.

Goals of the Course

The program aims to improve and uplift the state-of-the-art of science education in the region; to assist public and private schools in their faculty and staff development programs; strengthen and develop the competencies of science teachers to become better teachers, future science coordinators, curriculum planners and developers, science teacher trainers and science administrators. The program also responds to the science teachers need to avail of affordable, accessible and quality graduate school training in science education.

The General Science program aims to:

1. Continually conduct a periodic review of the science education curriculum to keep pace with the latest advancement in science and technology;
2. Expose science teachers to varied learning experiences related to new development in the sciences and general science education;
3. enhance/update the knowledge and capabilities of science teachers in order to carry out teaching-learning innovations in their respective schools;
4. Provide science teachers the opportunities and experiences to enhance their critical thinking skills; to solve problems; and to train them to express their creativity to be more responsive to the needs of the society and contribute to the achievement of national development goals;
5. Provide the science teachers with more opportunities to conduct analytical reviews of current researches/discoveries in the sciences and in science education in order to enrich their knowledge in consuming and producing researches.
6. Provide training to science teachers to prepare them in the performance of their roles as coordinators, curriculum planners and developers, science teacher trainers, science administrators as well as community leaders.

MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Program Description

The program is designed for further training of school teachers who would like to improve/upgrade their competency, knowledge and skills in the teaching of mathematics.  The program has two majors:  MA in Education major in Mathematics Teaching for elementary teachers and MA in Education major in Mathematics Education for secondary teachers.

Goals of the Course

1. Provide mathematics teachers with knowledge of the mathematical concepts and processes not only to strengthen their competence in teaching the subject but also to make the learning of mathematics exciting, interesting and enjoyable;
2. Develop and enhance skills in using computers and other educational
3. Technology;
4. Share expertise through extension and community involvement;
5. To turn out graduates who are competent in teaching content and in using effective strategies.

The Mathematics Education Program aims to:

1. Develop teachers/trainers who are committed to improve mathematics teaching and learning by enhancing computational and problem solving skills and providing models for positive attitude towards the discipline;
2. Provide graduate students with sufficient instructional materials (IMs) which they can use as models in developing their own IMs when they go back to their respective stations;
3. Enhance the critical and higher order thinking skills of mathematics teachers;
4. Develop and enhance skills in using calculators, computers, and other educational technology as instructional aids and computational tools;
5. Produce researches which are in line with the thrusts and priorities of the Mathematics Education Program that could be useful to them, to their students, to their school, and the community;
6. Provide for immersion opportunities and to get involved with the Graduate School extension services/programs through the various projects.

MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION MAJOR IN GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

Program Description

This program is designed for teachers who desire to pursue further study on child adolescent or adult growth and development in relation to the study on guidance through case studies, observations, demonstration, enquiries, reflections, practice in becoming truly a functional guidance worker.

Goals of the Course

1. Equip the student with knowledge and broad understanding of guidance.
2. Develop a conceptual framework of guidance program based on literature, review and class discussions on theories, methods and approaches.
3. Enhance skills in the various counseling techniques.
4. Provide opportunities for making researchers related to Guidance and Counseling.

The Guidance and Counseling program aims to:

1. To demonstrate one’s understanding of the mechanics of the organization and administration of guidance and counseling program in the three levels of education.
2. To utilize the principles, theories and methods in guidance and counseling, in helping pupils and students make adjustments in school, home and community.
3. To acquire a working knowledge of the scope of guidance services and the problems covered by this field.
4. To construct and accomplish the different guidance tools and instruments in gathering data/information about clients and gain skills in interpreting data.
5. To produce researches related to Guidance and Counseling services.
