Description of the Department
The Physical Education Department is directly under the College of Education of the
Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The department is serving tertiary physical education to five (5) colleges in the university such as College of Education, College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Social Development and Technology, and College of Nursing.
One of the programs offered in the College of Education is the Bachelor of Physical Education major in School Physical Education effective S.Y 2013-2014 after approving the conversion of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in MAPEH to Bachelor of Physical Education major in Physical Education through BOT No. 1501, series of 2013. The policies, standards and guidelines of the new curriculum are based from the CHED Memorandum No. 23, Series of 2011.
The BPE-SPE is a four-year program with a primary goal of providing the students with a broadly based understanding of the discipline through theoretical and practical courses in physical education and sports management. This program allows maximum opportunity for teaching, coaching, programming and administration and within their particular areas of interest.
The graduates of this program may go into: Teacher/Instructor of Physical Education in Kindergarten, Elementary and Secondary; Sports coaches of Elementary, Secondary and Tertiary Athletic programs; Department Head; School, District, Division and Regional Coordinators in Physical Education and Sports programs. The present Chairperson of the program is Dr. Regina B. Dumdumaya.
In response to the mandate of Commission of Higher Education requiring BPE-SPE to shift to an outcomes-based approach anchoring the PSG to the K-12 Enhanced Curriculum, the College of Education eventually revised the four (4) Academic Programs in conformance with CMO no 76, 74, series of 2017 and CMO No. 46, 2012 effective S.Y 2018-2019. One of the programs approved for revision through BOT No. 1812, series of 2017 was the Bachelor of Physical Education. The policies, standards and guidelines of the BPEd program are based from the CHED Memorandum No. 80, series of 2017.
General Goals
The Physical Education Department is promoting physical literacy of all learners from the basic to the tertiary education levels. The department is also providing opportunities for students to create a coherent and cohesive physical education programs and activities and empower the learners to be reflective, self-regulated and self-directed throughout their lives.
Program Goals
The BPEd is a four-year program aimed at equipping graduates with the competencies to meet the psychomotor, cognitive and affective needs of learners. These consist of: (1) a strong and substantial foundation of the subject matter that informs their curricular choices when planning, designing, implementing and assessing learning activities; (2) an understanding of the scope and sequence of various movement forms; as well as elements, strategies and tactics of these various movements in a multitude of settings that enables them to meet the needs of learners to know how, be able to do and how to learn; (3) expert knowledge of pedagogy for maximizing student engagement, mentoring students and modeling respect for differences in gender, ability and culture; (4) reflective practice that (a) propels them to set high standards for and hold themselves accountable to the professional standards; (b) enables them to identify gaps in their current competencies and pursue professional development opportunities; and (c) assists them in studying the impact of their teaching on student learning; and (5) building and cultivating relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, other professionals and learning communities; advocating for PE, being role models of integrity and professional excellence, as well as leaders in the service of education.
