BA Philosophy

Department Objectives

The Philosophy Department is a newly created unit in 2020 under the supervision of the College of Arts and Sciences. It is an academic unit that adheres to the academic policies under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Department nurtures the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy program first offered by the University in 2010. The program has produced graduates since 2014.

CAS GOAL 1: In providing opportunities for the students to develop their ingenuity and innovativeness in creating new knowledge relevant in the arts and sciences.

1. The Department shall facilitate theproduction of reflective and creative insights on existing problems and emerging issues relating to human existence, human sociality, human freedom, ethics/morality, science and technology and other relevant issues.
2. The Department invitesphilosophers for students to engage in philosophical dialogues to tackle socially relevant problems and issues.

CAS GOAL 2: Develop logical reasoning and judicious decisions necessary in the advancement of dynamic thinkers

1. The AB philosophy program shall, through seminars/workshops/debates, expose students to critical analyses of different perspectives of various philosophical issues to enable them to have enhanced analytical and decision-making skills.
2. The AB philosophy program shall, through effective instruction, nurture the students’ sense of wonder and curiosity on philosophy and its related issues.

CAS GOAL 3: Enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of students to become productive, functional and humane members of society

1. The Department shall, through immersions and exposures, promote a balanceddevelopment of intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of its students.

CAS GOAL 4: Develop social awareness and response ability through active involvement in socially relevant issues.

1. The Department shall undertake programs that give strong emphasis on social philosophy and law to enable students to have a deeper awareness of social reality and responsibility.

BA Philosophy Program Outcomes

The BA philosophy program expects its students and graduates to exhibit the following:

1. Understand the basic concepts and domains of philosophical knowledge and its applications to concrete situation and in the pursuit of life-long learning;
2. Demonstrate critical thinking and innovative leadership as they contribute meaningfully to the country’s development;
3. Appreciate the human condition through their engagement with the community and the safeguarding of our country’s cultural heritage;
4. Evaluate judiciously the essence of the True, the Good, and the Just in the practice of ethical standards for the profession, and in the respect of human dignity/rights;
5. Communicate philosophical knowledge and insights on human experiences within the appropriate cultural perspectives, taking into consideration inclusivity and cross-cultural tolerance/sensitivity.
6. Apply different analytical models in the generation and utilization of new knowledge in philosophical research.

Services:

PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES

1. Pre-enrolment Procedures

The department conducts pre-enrollment activities for freshmen students who are want to be part of the Philosophy program. The Department ensures that:

1. The student-applicant meets the University requirement for admission
2. Conducts preliminary interviews/tests for the readiness of the student applicant
3. When the student applicant passes the requirement, they are advised on the next step to take for enrolment.

1. Enrolment Procedure

The department conducts enrolment procedures for students to be officially enrolled in the program. It ensures that students:

1. Submits the necessary documents to the registrar and the department;
2. Evaluates the students as to the appropriate subjects take for the said semester. and
3. Advises students who have deficiencies in grade requirement to ensure its completion. Special procedure will be applied during the period of pandemic.

1. Actual Class Implementation
2. The Department ensures that classes are assigned with faculty;
3. Students are properly oriented with the course requirements according to the following:
   • Provision of Syllabus
   • Provision of Class orientation and expectations.
   • Provision of appropriate learning materials for use of students.

1. Monitoring and Evaluation

The department monitors and evaluates the performance of faculty and students. Regular class observations (online or offline) will be done. Students are likewise evaluated as to their actual class performance using prescribed evaluation and grading system.

1. Submission of Regular/Monthly/Quarterly Reports

The department will provide reports as required or requested by the administration or by interested parties taking into consideration data privacy requirements.

1. Training/Seminars

The Department, in coordination with the administration, provides learning opportunities for faculty and students.

Key Accomplishments:

1. The BA Philosophy Program has passed the AACCUP Accreditation Level 1 status in 2019. It is currently preparing for the Level 2 accreditation in 2021.
2. The BA Philosophy Program has also been awarded by the CHED Region 10 of Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) in 2019.
3. In 2019, the program has produced two graduates with Latin honors, Mr. Earl Guen Padayao (cum laude) and Ms. Rona Macalam (cum laude) in 2019.
4. Earl Guen Padayao received a national award as one of the Mga Bagong Rizal: Pag-Asa ng Bayan Awardeesfor 2017.
5. The program has produced two Central Student Government presidents, Mr. Bernard Amata III and Lawrence David S. Baylosis (current president 2020-2021).
