BukSU Intramurals 2018: ʺStrive for excellence, progressʺ

MALAYBALAY CITY (IPS/September 18, 2018) ʺStrive for excellence and progress. Being excellent in what you do will lead to progress, Dr. Estela C. Itaas,ʺ BukSU vice president for academic affairs, said during the opening ceremonies of the Intramurals 2018 today.

ʺ(This is because) progress is the result of dedication, hardwork and determination,ʺ Dr. Itaas said at the ceremony held at the Capitol Grounds here attended by the members of the BukSU academic community and stakeholders.

The university is holding the intramurals from September 18 to 21 with the theme: ʺBuilding excellence and progress through sports and socio-cultural competitions.ʺ

Dr. Itaas has pitched for Dr. Oscar B. Cabanelez, university president who is attending the budget hearing for state universities and colleges (SUCs) at the House of Representatives today and in the Senate on Wednesday.

Dr. Itaas has challenged BukSUʾs hundreds of athletes and their supporters in her remarks.

She said excellence is expected not only from athletes but also from facilitators, coaches, cheerers, water boys and girls.

Mr. Albert Celebran, university sports coordinator, said all systems were set for the holding of the intramurals as he announced that all games begin at 10a.m. right after the opening program.

He said this was possible because of the full support of the university administration.

In an interview on Monday, Dr. Cabañelez said he wants to assure the BukSU community of the university officials’ full support to ensure the students will enjoy and develop holistically.

The four-day annual sports fest and literary and socio-cultural competitions has opened with a parade and field demonstrations from pupils of the elementary school and the junior and senior high school students.

Thousands of students joined the traditional parade from the campus to the Capitol Grounds.

Christian Jude Sandinao, a gold medalist at the State Colleges and Universities’ Athletic Association (SCUAA) 2018 event, led the Oath of Amateurism and Esterlita Organiza, another SCUAA 2018 gold medalist, lighted the cauldron.

The sports competitions include athletics men and women, badminton men and women, baseball men, basketball men and women, chess men and women, dance sport standard and Latin, football men, lawn tennis men and women, Sepak Takraw men and women, softball women, table tennis men and women, volleyball men and women, Pinoy Olympics and Karatedo (KATA).

Among the socio-cultural events are on the spot poster making, pencil drawing, charcoal drawing, painting and photo contest for visual arts; street dance/hiphop and contemporary for team dance; dagliang talumpati, pagsusulat ng sanaysay, pagkukuwento, extemporaneous speaking, story telling, essay writing and quiz bowl for literacy arts; pop solo, vocal duet, vocal solo – Kundiman and instrumental solo for music; radio drama for performing arts and debate for additional event.

The search for Mr. and Miss BukSU talent night was held on September 12, 2018 and coronation night on September 14. The socio-cultural competitions were started on September 17 with musical events held at the auditorium.

Although the high school students held advance games, the championship games of their sports events will also be played this week.

For the first time this year, some events like softball will be played in the BukSU Annex Campus in Casisang, Malaybalay City. (Walter I. Balane with a report from Rubbie Mark Micabalo/IPS volunteer)
