MALAYBALAY CITY (July 16, 2018) – The Bukidnon State University Library has recently welcomed benchmarking visits from counterparts in different academic institutions.

In the second quarter this year, four universities visited the BukSU Library, Ms. Chandrani Yves E. Estrada said in a report to IPS.

Estrada said personnel of the neighboring Central Mindanao University (CMU) Library, headed by university librarian Ms. Belinda B. Calunsag, held the latest bench marking visit on June 14.

Ms. Calunsad, as relayed by Ms. Estrada, said one of the main objectives of their visit is to observe the latest technology and infrastructures of BukSU Library such as the Learning Commons.

A total of 19 library staff composed the CMU visitors. Ms. Estrada said the CMU visitors also observed how BukSU maximized the use of its Library Management System (LMS) and how it went through the request and procurement process for the Learning Commons (LC).

Previous visitors include 23 library staff from Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), two from Camiguin Polytechnic College (CPC) and eight from Davao City-based Rizal Memorial Colleges Inc. on April 6, May 25 and 28 respectively.

Like CMU, both WMSU and RMCI were interested in how the university has set up the Learning Commons.

The team from CPC, aspiring to apply for ISO 9001 Certification, checked the university library’s processes, documents and records.

The BukSU Learning Commons was launched on August 15, 2016.  BukSU is the first SUC in Northern Mindanao to open a Learning Commons, which promotes group learning.

A “learning commons” is usually an academic library, that provides the space, technology and services to support learning. These learning spaces can include areas for group work, individual study spaces, instructional rooms, computer pools, multi-media labs and soft seating areas, according to queensu.ca.

Meanwhile, on May 11, 2018, staff from the BukSU Library attended the general assembly of the Academic Libraries Information in Mindanao (ALINET) at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTsP), Cagayan de Oro City. ALINET also elected its set of officers and organized a seminar on “Library Best Practices”.

The seminar was aimed at identifying and adopting good and best practices and benchmarks. Estrada said these benchmarks are expected to ultimately enhance value-based services of libraries, inform the course of planning for library management and inspire creative ideas and opportunities for improving services to library users.

Ms. Chandrani Yves E. Estrada, BukSU Supervisor of Libraries, spoke as one of the resource persons in the seminar.

She was elected as member of the ALINET board of directors and chosen as secretary. The new set of officers took their oath of office on May 30, 2018 in Cagayan de Oro City. (IPS with a report from Ms. Chandrani Yves E. Estrada/University Library)
