MALAYBALAY CITY (April 12) People or social skills are among the important things students should learn in college, said 19-year old Doreen Khrystel P. Gonzales, one of the 2,165 graduates of Bukidnon State University’s Main Campus on April 4.

“You need this to survive life. You cannot do all things alone,” she said in an interview.

In real life, she said, people have to deal with different situations that they should learn to address. Thinking skills, for her, should be learned much earlier, in basic education.

“In adult life you don’t have to use trigonometry every day – but you deal with people every day,” she added.

Gonzales, a resident of Kalasungay, Malaybalay City, graduated cum laude (with honors). She also received the 2018 Sen. Manny Villar Excellence Award and the Kaamulan Eagles Club Excellence Award.

The Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Biology Education graduate also won another special award for the beauty pageant category. Gonzales was crowned Laga Ta Bukidnon in 2017, among other beauty titles in her college life.

She had her off-campus internship in the Philippine Normal University in Manila under the Erasmus Mundus program, where she taught with other pre-service teachers from ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations).

Gonzales said her interest has always been with science, that’s why she picked biology education as a major. She was lured into teaching because her mom is a teacher.

Science, she added, “brings a lot of innovations”, is equivalent to development and with its research and inventions makes life easier.

“Science could be used in different aspects of our society, in agriculture, economics and other human sciences,” she said.

The multi-awarded graduate admitted she was not a “perfect” or “outstanding” student in the strictest sense. She said she also had a lot of “party time” and TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday) moments with friends.

“But I tried to spend all those relaxing time as a celebration of my achievements in school,” she added.

Gonzales, however, noted that it is imperative for students to have study skills.

“Strategy is important in college, know the grading system, know what’s counted and focus your participation there,” she added.

As a place of learning, Gonzales compared BukSU to Philippine Normal University, where she did part of her internship.

“We won’t be left behind. We are at par with facilities, teachers and students. We are at par with premier education focused universities like PNU,” she added.

Gonzales, however, noted that they are happy BukSU has another campus eyed for opening. She said BukSU can improve in open spaces; it is good for leisurely learning and relaxation of the mind.

Aside from Gonzales, the BukSU main campus produced eight other cum laude graduates this year, according to the Office of the Registrar, namely; Karl Bryan H. Bago (BS in Business Administration), Zairene B. Grantuza (Bachelor of Elementary Education), Honey Zade J. Dumaque (Bachelor of Science in Accountancy), Armel E. Baldesco (Bachelor of Science in Accountancy). Justine Zyril Oyasan (BS Hotel and Restaurant Management), Eden B. Magdadaro (Bachelor of Secondary Education), Racuel Jane T. Villarba (Bachelor of Science in Accountancy) and Friendly G. Edquilang (Bachelor of Physical Education major in School Physical Education).

There are a total of 2,165 graduates from the main campus’ six colleges this year. The College of Arts and Sciences produced 384 graduates from seven programs. The College of Business, home of six programs including two post-graduate degrees, produced 757 graduates.

The College of Education, the biggest in terms of number of programs – 18, produced 755 graduates. The COE, the flagship college, is home to the university’s three doctorate programs.  The College of Social Development and Technology, home of five programs, produced 222 graduates. The relatively newer and smaller units, the College of Nursing has 25 graduates and the College of Law with 22 graduates.

The theme of this year’s main campus graduation rites focused on “Pursuing Excellence through Innovative Leadership in Education.” Graduation rites for the 18 external studies centers of BukSU are underway.  (Walter I. Balane/Information and Publication Focal Person)
